The three grades, and what is actually removed

Every CBD product starts as a crude extract holding CBD alongside minor cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, plant waxes and a small quantity of THC. What separates the three grades on a shelf is how far that raw material has been refined, and refining is subtractive: each step upward in purity removes something.

Full spectrum stops early. It keeps the profile broadly intact, THC included, and the argument for it is that the plant is more than the sum of its parts. Broad spectrum takes the same starting material and puts it through an additional step, usually chromatography, to remove the THC while keeping the rest. Isolate goes to the end of the process and arrives at crystalline CBD, typically quoted at around ninety-nine per cent purity, with everything else stripped away.

That subtractive order explains most of the differences people notice. Full spectrum tastes and smells the most like hemp, because the terpenes responsible for that are still present. Isolate is close to flavourless, which is why it dominates gummies, drinks and anything where the manufacturer wants to control the taste. Broad spectrum sits between the two on both counts, and it is the grade most UK brands reach for when they want plant complexity without the compound the law counts.

One thing worth naming, because four of the pages ranking for this comparison describe broad spectrum and isolate as zero per cent THC. Zero is a claim about a detection limit, not about the universe. What a laboratory reports as non-detected means non-detected at that laboratory's threshold, and thresholds differ. The right question to ask a seller is not whether a product is THC-free but what limit of detection the certificate was run at.

The arithmetic that changes how you read a full spectrum label

The UK consumer test is a fixed quantity: no more than 1mg of controlled cannabinoids in the container, whatever that container is. It is not a proportion, and this is where the widely repeated cultivation percentage does real damage, because full spectrum is the only grade that deliberately retains the compound being measured.

Turn the rule around and something useful falls out that we have not seen published anywhere. If the ceiling is a fixed weight and the container is not, then the maximum lawful THC concentration in a full spectrum product is not a fixed figure at all. It falls as the container gets bigger. A 10ml bottle weighs roughly ten grams, so 1mg of THC is about one hundredth of one per cent of it. A 100ml bottle weighs roughly a hundred grams, so the same 1mg is about one thousandth of one per cent, ten times tighter, for exactly the same product.

Set that against the figure three of the ranking pages quote as the legal test. The cultivation threshold is roughly twenty times looser than what a 10ml container can lawfully hold, and roughly two hundred times looser than a 100ml one. A brand working to the percentage rather than the milligram is not slightly out. It is out by orders of magnitude, and the bigger the format the worse it gets.

The practical reading is simple. A full spectrum oil in a small bottle is a comparatively easy thing to make compliant. The same extract in a large one is a genuinely difficult piece of manufacturing, and the certificate should reflect that difficulty by reporting a milligram total for the whole container rather than a concentration. If it reports only a percentage, the document has not answered the question the law asks.

The entourage effect, stated honestly

Ask why anyone would accept the extra compliance difficulty of full spectrum and the answer is always the same phrase. The entourage effect is the idea that cannabinoids, terpenes and other plant compounds interact, and that a whole-plant extract therefore behaves differently from an equivalent quantity of pure CBD.

It is a plausible hypothesis with some preliminary support, and it is genuinely interesting. It is not established fact. Most of the supporting work is preclinical or small in scale, the interactions proposed are numerous and not individually characterised, and the phrase has been doing heavy commercial lifting for a decade on the strength of evidence that has not caught up with it.

Every page we tore down that mentions the entourage effect asserts it flatly, one of them stating that layering cannabinoids will enhance the effects of CBD. We are not going to repeat that, for two reasons. The first is that it overstates what the research shows. The second is that a UK retailer attaching an outcome to a CBD product is presenting an unlicensed medicine, which is a line the MHRA and the Advertising Standards Authority both police, and the entourage effect does not become sayable just because it is dressed up as botany.

What we can say is narrower and true. Full spectrum and broad spectrum contain compounds that isolate does not. Whether that difference matters to you is not something a shop can answer, and anyone who tells you it definitely does is selling rather than explaining.

Where the ranking pages disagree with each other

One of the more revealing things about researching this comparison is finding two well-ranked pages giving directly opposite reassurances about the same product, neither of them citing anything.

One brand DTC page warns that if you use CBD regularly, trace THC can accumulate and may flag on a workplace or sports screening. Another states that the amounts in full spectrum products should not trigger a positive result. Both are describing the same category to the same audience, and only one of them can be right for any given person.

The accurate position is less comfortable than either. Screening looks for THC and its metabolites, not for CBD, so the grade you choose is the variable that matters. A fully compliant full spectrum container may still hold up to 1mg, which is small but is not nothing, and how any individual metabolises and clears that depends on frequency, quantity, body composition and the sensitivity of the particular test. Nobody selling you a product can predict the outcome, and a shop that promises you certainty either way has left the ground of what is knowable.

So the honest caution, and the one we would give anyone who drives professionally or works somewhere with screening: this is the situation broad spectrum and isolate exist for. Choosing a grade with nothing controlled in it removes the variable entirely, and that is a considerably better plan than choosing full spectrum and hoping.

Spectrum is not the only thing on the label

Spectrum interacts with the rest of UK CBD regulation in ways that catch people out, because the grade of extract and the format it goes into are governed by different regimes.

Anything you swallow sits inside the Novel Foods regime, whatever its spectrum. Vapes and topicals do not, and no spectrum makes them do so. That means a full spectrum balm and a full spectrum oil face the same container rule but entirely different rules on top of it, and it is why a claim of Novel Foods status on a balm is a signal that the seller does not know what they are describing.

The other thing spectrum labels do not cover is semi-synthetic cannabinoids. H4CBD is hydrogenated CBD, which makes it a different molecule, and it is neither full spectrum nor broad spectrum because it is not a plant extraction grade at all. It holds no Novel Foods authorisation. We stock a small number of H4CBD lines on an explicit decision by the owner and we say so plainly on those listings, which is more than most of the market does. If a product is described as a spectrum but the cannabinoid named is not one that grows in hemp, the label is doing something other than informing you.

Finally, a note on what is genuinely unresolved. Our own full spectrum lines are listed with an open worklist rather than a closed one: the obligation to hold a current per-batch certificate showing the container total is a live piece of work here, not a finished one, and we would rather write that down than imply every certificate is already on file. That is the honest state of a market where the ingestible authorisation process itself is unfinished.

Choosing between them, including when not to

There is no best grade, only a grade that suits a set of circumstances, and any page that crowns a winner is telling you about its own range.

Isolate makes sense if you want nothing in the product except CBD, if you are screened at work, or if you dislike the taste of hemp. It is also the easiest grade to verify, because there is nothing controlled in it to argue about. The trade-off is that you are buying one compound, and if the plant complexity is the reason you were interested in the first place, isolate is not what you were after.

Broad spectrum is the sensible middle for most people. It keeps the minor cannabinoids and terpenes, removes the compound that creates the compliance and screening questions, and is widely available across oils, capsules and vape liquids. The thing to check is the removal step, because it is a process and processes vary between production runs. A batch certificate matters more here than the brand's reputation does.

Full spectrum is for someone who specifically wants the whole extract and has understood what comes with it: a genuine, if very small, quantity of THC, a compliance position that gets tighter as the container gets bigger, and a real reason to insist on a current certificate every time. If you are new to CBD, if you are screened, or if you are buying a large format, it is not the place to start. That is not a criticism of the grade. It is what taking it seriously looks like.

How to verify the spectrum from a lab report

A label states the spectrum. A certificate proves it, and the two do not always agree. Reading one takes about a minute once you know which line to look at.

Find the cannabinoid table on the certificate. A genuine full spectrum extract shows CBD alongside a spread of minor cannabinoids and a small but present THC figure. Broad spectrum shows the same spread with THC reported as non-detected or below the limit of quantification. Isolate shows CBD and essentially nothing else. If a product is sold as full spectrum and the certificate shows only CBD, the label is wrong regardless of which direction the error runs in.

Then check the two things that separate a useful certificate from a decorative one: a batch number that matches the pack, and a total for the container expressed in milligrams. A concentration alone cannot tell you whether a large bottle is compliant, for the reasons the arithmetic above sets out.

Can I tell the spectrum from the taste or the colour?
