What Professor Herb actually make

Professor Herb describe themselves as the UK's leading hemp, substitute and CBD brand, and the physical distribution backs the first part up: they run a store locator, so the products are in real shops rather than only online. It is one of the few brands we stock where you could plausibly have seen the packaging before you ever searched for it.

The centre of gravity is smokable and solid hemp. The Premium Hemp Blend comes in thirteen flavours, from Apache Haze and Havana Gold to Girl Scout Cookies and Rainbow Candy, and it is the single most requested line in this brand; it is also out of stock with our distributor at the moment, which we would rather say here than let you find at the basket. Around it sits a deep hash range: 3.5g briquettes in Bubba Gum OG, Express, Gelato, Guava Dog, Moonrock Cookies and Tangerine Dream, a second briquette line in six terpene flavours from Grape Kush to Strawberry Cough, plus 2g solid extracts graded from 15 up to 22 per cent.

The rest is a supporting cast that is genuinely useful rather than filler. A 1,000mg full-spectrum CBD pod kit with replacement pods, a 1,000mg CBD vape liquid in six flavours, an instant hemp tea, king size rolling papers with tips, a biodegradable hemp shredder grinder, and a dry herb vaporiser. Then five H4CBD lines, which are a different thing entirely and get their own section below. The 3,000mg MCT tincture the brand also makes is no longer stocked by either of our distributors.

The one number worth fixing in your head before you browse: six of the 24 lines carry a milligram figure, and all six are vape products. If a stated cannabinoid amount is what you are shopping on, the hash and the blend will not give you one.

H4CBD is not a new form of CBD, whatever you have read

It is hydrogenated cannabidiol, a semi-synthetic compound, and the hundred-times figure is a binding measurement, not an effect.

Professor Herb's own H4CBD page opens by calling it a new form of CBD growing in popularity for its high level of potency, and adds that some sources claim it is a hundred times more effective than CBD. The best independent page ranking for this brand repeats both lines. They are the two most-copied statements about H4CBD in UK retail and both need unpicking.

On the first: H4CBD is hydrogenated cannabidiol. Hydrogen atoms are added to the CBD molecule in a laboratory, which produces a different compound. Professor Herb say so themselves further down the same page, noting that the two are not exactly the same molecule, which is more candour than most of the category manages. But a thing made from CBD is not a form of CBD, any more than margarine is a form of sunflower. It is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid and it should be shopped for as one.

On the hundred-times figure: that number comes from laboratory measurements of how strongly the molecule binds to a receptor, not from any measurement of what it does in a person. Binding affinity and effect are different quantities, and the brand's own wording, some sources boasting, is doing a lot of quiet work. Nobody should buy on the strength of that number.

The compliance line needs the same care. Professor Herb state that their H4CBD products comply with UK law and that any high-inducing THC has been removed or reduced to permitted levels. Read closely, that is an answer about THC. It is not an answer about H4CBD, and the two questions are separate. We list these five lines because the owner of this business decided to after being shown the reasoning in full, and we would rather print it here than leave you to find it out later.

Lab reports: better than some, thinner than it looks

Professor Herb maintain a lab reports page, which puts them ahead of two of the biggest brands we stock. What that page contains is worth knowing before you rely on it.

It states that all of their suppliers provide the relevant third-party lab reports in line with UK regulations, and then links out to an external file-sharing folder. The certificates are not hosted on the brand's own site, no testing laboratory is named on the page, and no cannabinoid or THC figures appear on it. Compare that with Orange County, which publishes downloadable batch certificates on its own site and names the accreditation standard of the laboratory it uses.

So the honest ranking, across the brands we have written up so far, runs like this. Orange County publishes batch certificates on site and names the standard. Professor Herb sits in the middle, and that is a real position rather than a criticism, but it is not the same as documentation you can check in two clicks.

Five of the 24 lines here are filed as full spectrum, the CBD pod kit and its pods plus three H4CBD vape lines labelled that way, and full spectrum is the grade that deliberately keeps the plant's other cannabinoids in the extract, so those are the ones where the per-container question below actually applies. How Professor Herb compares with the other brands we stock

The comparison that matters is Euphoria, because those two brands between them supply 28 of the 31 lines in our hemp and hash aisle, fourteen each, and almost nobody else competes there.

Euphoria goes deeper on named strains. Ten CBD hash strains from 9 to 40 per cent, a 50 per cent solid extract, and a large edibles range on the side. Professor Herb goes more British: a briquette range built on flavour, two pod systems, a vape liquid, and accessories that actually match the products.

The practical difference is labelling. Euphoria puts a percentage on nearly everything in its hash range, which is at least a number. Professor Herb's briquette hash is sold by strain and flavour with no cannabinoid figure at all, and only the 2g solid extracts carry a percentage. If you want to compare like with like across a shelf, Euphoria makes that easier.

Outside the hash aisle the comparison changes completely. Professor Herb has no oil in stock with us; if oil is what you want, Orange County covers ten strengths from 500mg upward and publishes better paperwork. If you want gummies, sweets or capsules, Professor Herb does not make them at all and Hempthy does.

Where Professor Herb is strong, and where it is not

Strong on flavour, British distribution and matched accessories; weak on numbers, the H4CBD claim, and a flagship line that is out of stock.

A dozen briquette hash varieties across two lines and thirteen blend flavours is a serious flavour programme, and the terpene profiles are the reason people come back to this brand rather than a plainer equivalent. The packaging is good, the branding is consistent, and the accessories are designed to go with the products rather than bolted on. It is British and it is in shops, which in a category where most of the interesting product arrives from the Netherlands, Spain or the Czech Republic makes it easier to get hold of and easier to hold to account.

Against that: eighteen of 24 lines tell you nothing about cannabinoid content, with percentages on four solid extracts and nowhere else in the hash range, which makes most of this brand impossible to compare against anything that does print a figure. The H4CBD messaging is covered above. The Premium Hemp Blend, the line most people arrive for, is out of stock with the one distributor that carries it. And every live line comes to us through a single distributor, which is fine until it is not.

Where Professor Herb sits under UK law

The consumer test in the UK is one milligram of controlled cannabinoids in the container. Not a percentage, not per serving. The brand's position, and its best reseller's, is that products contain less than the legal amount of THC permitted, which is true as far as it goes but names no figure and does not say per what. Per container is the answer, and it applies to a 3.5g briquette exactly as it applies to a 30ml bottle.

The 0.2 per cent figure that circulates across this category is a different rule again. It governs how much THC is permitted in a standing hemp crop grown under a Home Office cultivation licence. It is a farming threshold about a field and has never been a test of what may be sold to a consumer.

Two things specific to this brand need saying plainly. First, the UK industrial hemp licence covers the stalk and the seed of the plant, not the flower, so smokable hemp products sit outside it. Second, H4CBD holds no Novel Foods authorisation and is not covered by the CBD regime at all. Both categories ship here on an explicit decision by the owner of this business, made with that reasoning in front of them, and we would rather set it out than let the packaging imply otherwise.

One more note on what this page does not do. The brand markets its hemp blend as a substitute product, and the strongest independent page ranking for it runs sections on whether smoking hemp is safe and what the benefits of smoking hemp are. We do not answer either question, and not because we have not thought about it. UK advertising and medicines rules do not permit a retailer to present a product as safe, as beneficial, or as a way to give up anything else. A page that does is a page with a problem coming.
