Why small and large tell you almost nothing

Every figure in the table below is published by the seller itself. We have simply put them next to each other, which is apparently all it takes.

A well-known UK head shop sells a large tray at roughly 27.5 by 17.5 centimetres. A seed company sells that same footprint as its medium. RAW's small is 28 by 18 centimetres, which is larger than both. And Smoke Arsenal's small is 18 by 14 centimetres, which is around half the working area of RAW's small.

So a shopper filtering a site by large can quite easily receive a tray smaller than the small they would have been sent by a different brand. Two of the pages ranking for this search organise their entire catalogue by these words and never define one of them. One of them has the single word Large as its page heading.

The fix is simple and nobody applies it: quote the numbers. Below are the real dimensions for everything on this shelf, and the competitor figures alongside so you can see the problem rather than take our word for it.

Everything here is metal, including the one called hemp

All five lines on this shelf are pressed metal. That is the material the category has settled on, because it takes a wipe, does not warp, and holds a printed design well.

One name needs untangling. The RAW Classic Hemp tray is not made of hemp. Classic Hemp is the name of the artwork, borrowed from RAW's Classic hemp rolling papers, and the tray itself is metal at 11 by 7 by 1 inches. We mention it because the name genuinely reads as a material and because we had described it wrongly ourselves on the accessories page until this week.

Hemp does appear as a material elsewhere in the accessories aisle, in the rolling machines and the grinders, so the confusion is reasonable. Not here.

On build, two details separate a tray that survives from one that does not. Raised edges are the point of the object, and depth matters more than footprint for keeping things in: the trays here run from about 15mm deep on a small up to 55mm on the Monkey King box. Rounded corners, which RAW calls out across its range, are what stop a tray collecting residue in a place you cannot reach and what stop it catching on a bag lining.

The best competitor page in this category describes its trays as lightweight pressed metal built to take regular handling without bending, which is an honest description of what all of these are. They are not heirloom objects. They are sturdy dishes with good artwork on them.

The Monkey King is a box, not a tray

One line here is a genuinely different product and it is worth separating out.

The Monkey King Rolling Tray Box is a closing metal box measuring 195 by 155 by 55 millimetres. Inside it there is a full-sized rolling tray, two built-in cone holders, and an elastic band for holding papers, filters or finished pre-rolls in place. It also arrives with five packs of pre-rolled hemp cones at three cones a pack, so fifteen cones come with it.

That combination answers a different question from an open tray. An open tray is a work surface. A box is a work surface that shuts, keeps its contents together, travels, and puts everything out of sight when you have finished. If you share a house, move between rooms, or simply want the whole business in one object, the box is the better buy and it is not close.

The trade-off is depth against portability. At 55mm it is the deepest thing on this shelf and it will not slide into a coat pocket the way a small flat tray will.

Choosing, and the honest limits

Three questions and you are done.

Where will it live? A desk or a table takes a large. A lap or a bag takes a small, and here the Smoke Arsenal small at 18 by 14 centimetres is the genuinely pocketable one while RAW's small is really a desk tray with a modest name.

Does it need to shut? If yes, the Monkey King box, and nothing else here competes.

Do you care what it looks like? You should, because it is most of what separates these. Nobody buys a rolling tray on specification alone and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Now the cautions. Nothing on this shelf contains CBD or any other cannabinoid, and no page in this category bothers to say so. These are tools, and hemp in a name here refers to artwork or, elsewhere in the accessories aisle, to the material an object is made from.

Two of our five lines publish no dimensions at all, which is the manufacturer's omission rather than ours, and we would rather flag it than fill the gap with a guess. Ask us before ordering if the exact footprint matters.

Half the Monkey King designs are out of stock at both distributors right now. Metal trays also carry printed artwork that will scuff over time on a tray in daily use, so a soft cloth is a better idea than a scourer.

And if what you actually want is a cannabinoid rather than the kit that goes with it, this is the wrong shelf entirely. The CBD oil and hemp and hash aisles are where a stated amount lives.
