Sweets are not gummies, and the difference is anatomical

A gummy is chewed for a few seconds and swallowed. From there it is digested, which takes time and means the liver processes a share of the cannabinoid before it reaches circulation. That is a perfectly good way to take CBD and it is why the gummies aisle is the biggest on this site.

The formats here behave differently because of how long they stay put. A lollipop takes ten minutes or more to finish. A mint dissolves slowly. Chewing gum is worked for several minutes with the flavour and the cannabinoid released against the gums and under the tongue the whole time. In each case a portion is absorbed through the lining of the mouth, which is a shorter route with fewer stops.

The most useful competitor page in this category puts it plainly: the CBD in gum is absorbed through the gums and under the tongue, bypassing much of the digestive system. That is correct, and it is the entire reason this aisle exists as something other than a sub-heading of the gummies one.

What that buys you in practice is a faster start and a shorter tail. What you give up is precision, because how much of a lollipop you finish and how long you chew are not measurable in the way half a gummy is. Neither is better. They answer different questions, which is exactly what the table below is for.

Chewing gum: two strengths, four brands, one real variable

Now the part nobody explains. A listing reading 17mg (24 Pack) contains two separate numbers that are easy to run together. The bracketed figure is a pack count and the milligram figure is a strength, and in this category a bracketed count can describe pieces in one pack or packs in one case depending on the line. Read the product page rather than assuming, and if the listing does not make it clear, ask us before ordering rather than after.

On chewing time: longer is the point. The release happens while you are working the gum, so a piece spat out after thirty seconds has given up most of what it was carrying. There is no benefit to chewing it into the afternoon either, since the flavour going means the release has finished.

Lollipops, and what a 100 pack really is

Lollipops are the largest sub-shelf here and the one where pack sizes vary most wildly. The same Bubbly Billy Buds lollipop is sold as a 5 pack gift box and as a 100 pack, with Multitrance also running 70 pack Haze lollipops and 10 pack Cannabis lollipops. A note on the strain-named ones. Names like OG Kush, White Widow and Energy Skunk describe a terpene flavour profile, not potency and not anything else. They are flavour labels in exactly the way Blueberry is.

Most lollipop lines in this category, ours included, do not print a milligram figure in the product name. Where a strength exists it is on the product page. That is normal for the format across UK retail rather than something being hidden, but it does mean lollipops are the hardest thing here to compare on strength, and if a precise amount matters to you, this is not the shelf for it.

Mints and hard sweets, the shelf everyone forgets

Not one page in the current search results for this term covers mints at all, which is odd given they are the most practical format in the aisle.

Hempthy runs both of the printed-strength lines here: Imperial Mints at 300mg and 1000mg a tin, and American Hard Gums at 300mg and 1000mg a bag. Those are bag and tin totals in the same way a gummy pack total works, so divide by the pieces inside to get what you are actually taking. Hard sweets are the third format: Euphoria's Cannabis Candies come in Rasta, sour apple, sour raspberry, sour strawberry and sour watermelon, alongside the two Hempthy hard gum lines.

Mints are worth singling out for one reason. They are the only CBD format on this site that looks exactly like something ordinary. A tin of mints on a desk is a tin of mints. If discretion is the thing you actually want, this is the shelf, and it is the reason the format deserves more than the zero words the rest of the market gives it.

A CBD sweet may be sold in the UK when it holds no more than 1mg of controlled cannabinoids in the whole container, is made from a permitted hemp variety, and complies with UK food law including the Novel Foods regime, which covers everything you eat or drink.

The test is per container. Not per lollipop, not per piece of gum, and not a percentage of anything. A 100 pack of lollipops is held to the same 1mg as a 5 pack. This is worth saying because so much of the UK CBD market quotes a percentage figure that belongs to hemp cultivation licensing instead, though to their credit the retailers currently ranking for this particular search get it right.

Every line in this aisle is CBD isolate, which is the simplest case there is: no THC to speak of, nothing else from the plant, and no full-spectrum complications of the sort that occupy our oil and hash aisles.

The rest is standard. Over-18s only. These are food products rather than medicines and nobody selling them may tell you what they do for a health condition, which is a rule two of the pages ranking for this term appear to have overlooked. One dietary note, since it is asked more here than anywhere else. Lollipops and hard sweets are sugar by construction, gum is usually sweetened with polyols, and gelatine may be present in some lines and not others. If you want to know exactly how much you have taken, buy gummies or oil. A gummy has a printed figure and a countable portion. A lollipop has neither, and how much of it you finish is not something anyone is measuring.
