Cannabis essential oil is not hemp seed oil and not an extract

Three ingredients turn up on cannabis-branded food labels and they are routinely treated as interchangeable. They are not. They are made in three different ways and they contain three different things.

Essential oil, which is what these lollipops use, is made by steam distillation of the flower. Steam is passed through the plant material, the volatile aromatic compounds evaporate with it, and the condensed result is the oil. The key word there is volatile. Cannabinoids are not volatile, so they do not carry over into the distillate. CBD and THC are left behind in the plant material.

What does come over is terpenes, the aromatic compounds responsible for how cannabis smells. Myrcene and beta-caryophyllene are the principal ones. That is the entire reason to use essential oil in a sweet: it delivers the smell and taste and nothing else.

And a CBD extract is a third thing, made by CO2 or solvent extraction, which is designed specifically to capture the cannabinoids that the other two leave out. That is what is in the brand's hash and shatter.

So a Euphoria shelf can carry all three words and mean something genuinely different by each. Nobody has ever set them side by side.

Why steam distillation leaves the cannabinoids out

This is worth one paragraph of chemistry because it explains the whole product.

Steam distillation works on volatility. Heat the plant material with steam, and any compound that evaporates readily travels with the vapour and is collected when it condenses. Anything that does not evaporate stays behind in the pot.

Terpenes are volatile, which is why you can smell cannabis from across a room. Cannabinoids are not, which is why you cannot get a cannabinoid out of a plant by boiling it.

So the separation is not a design choice the manufacturer made, it is a property of the method. A steam-distilled cannabis essential oil is essentially a terpene product, and any cannabinoid in it would be a trace at best.

The practical consequence for a buyer is simple: these lollipops smell and taste of cannabis and contain no meaningful cannabinoid. That is not a criticism. It is what the ingredient list says, and it is more honest than a lot of what this category prints.

The brand tests for something most confectioners never think about

Euphoria states that its products undergo laboratory analysis to confirm the absence of synthetic cannabinoids. That is an odd thing to see on a sweet, and it is worth explaining rather than skipping past.

Synthetic cannabinoids are laboratory-made compounds that were sprayed onto inert plant material and sold under names like Spice and Black Mamba, frequently labelled as herbal incense. Supplying them has been an offence in the UK since the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016, and they caused this whole category more reputational damage than anything else in its history.

So a manufacturer working with cannabis-derived aromatics testing specifically for synthetic cannabinoid contamination is testing for the exact thing that would be catastrophic if it were present. It is a sensible test and almost nobody mentions it.

It is worth being precise about what that claim does and does not cover. It is an assurance about contamination, not a cannabinoid content statement. No CBD figure is published for these lollipops by anyone, and given the essential oil we would not expect one.

What a retail strip actually is

The format is worth a word because it explains the product name.

Ten flat lollipops are joined together in a single strip, perforated so that individual sweets tear off. The strip is designed to hang on a counter display or a clip strip, which is a merchandising fixture rather than a domestic one.

That is why it is called a retail strip rather than a pack. It is built for a shop counter, where the format lets a customer take one, and for the seller it is a single unit that hangs rather than needing shelf space.

The flat shape matters more than it sounds. A flat lolly dissolves differently from a ball, presenting more surface area for less mass, so the flavour arrives faster and the sweet lasts less time than its weight suggests.

This is the only one we have identified as using a steam-distilled essential oil. The rest use seed oil, unspecified flavouring or nothing stated at all.

Who should buy something else

If you want a long-lasting lolly, the flat format works against you. More surface area for less mass means the flavour arrives quickly and the sweet is gone sooner, and at 7.7 grams these are about half the size of a standard cannabis pop.

If you dislike strong herbal flavours, be aware that essential oil is the most concentrated way of delivering the smell of cannabis into a sweet. Descriptions of this line use words like intense and strongly spiced, and that is the point of the product rather than an accident.

And if you are buying for a home rather than a counter, a hanging retail strip is an odd format to receive. It is designed for a shop fixture, and there is no advantage to it in a cupboard.
