Euphoria H4CBD 20% Oil, 10ml

Both bottles hold two hundred drops, so the strength is entirely in the drop

Put the two Euphoria H4CBD oils side by side and something useful appears that neither listing points out.

The 10 per cent bottle states approximately 200 drops. The 20 per cent bottle states approximately 200 drops. Both are 10ml. What changes between them is not how many drops you get, it is what is in each one: 5mg in the milder bottle, 10mg in this one.

That sounds obvious and it has a consequence people do not think about until they are holding the bottle. A drop is the smallest unit a dropper gives you. So the smallest amount you can take from this bottle is twice the smallest amount you can take from the 10 per cent, and there is no way around that short of diluting it into something else. If you want fine control at the low end, the stronger bottle is the wrong tool, and that is a real argument for the 10 per cent rather than a marketing one.

Worth crediting the maker on one point while we are here. Ten millilitres across two hundred drops is 0.05ml a drop, which is a realistic dropper measure, and two hundred drops at ten milligrams comes to the two thousand milligrams on the label. The numbers agree with each other. That is more unusual in this corner of the market than it should be, and several products we have written up this month could not manage it.

The extraction described cannot by itself make H4CBD

The trade description for this oil says it is extracted from cannabis through supercritical CO2 extraction, producing a completely pure product. That sentence is doing something worth unpicking.

Supercritical CO2 extraction is a separation method. Carbon dioxide is brought to a state where it behaves partly like a liquid and partly like a gas, run through plant material, and used to strip out compounds that are already in there. It is a good, clean technique and it is the industry standard for making cannabis extracts. What it cannot do is make a compound that was not there to begin with.

H4CBD is not meaningfully present in the plant. It is produced by taking CBD and hydrogenating it, which means adding hydrogen atoms across a double bond in a reactor with a catalyst. That is a chemical manufacturing step and it happens after extraction, not during it. Our Professor Herb solid extract listing goes through what that process actually involves.

So the description is not false so much as truncated. CO2 extraction may well be exactly how the CBD starting material was obtained. But the step that turns that CBD into H4CBD, the step that is the entire difference between this bottle and an ordinary CBD oil, is missing from the sentence altogether. A reader who knows nothing about the chemistry would come away thinking this was pressed out of a plant.

The same copy calls H4CBD partly naturally occurring, which our 10 per cent listing addresses. The two statements work together to make a manufactured molecule sound agricultural, and we would rather point that out than repeat it.

Twenty per cent is not the strongest thing on this shelf

A percentage on a bottle invites you to compare it against other percentages, and almost nothing else in the category is labelled that way, so it is worth converting everything into the same unit.

Two thousand milligrams in ten millilitres is two hundred milligrams in each millilitre. That is a strong oil. It is not, however, the strongest oil we sell, and it is not even the strongest thing Euphoria sells.

Euphoria's own full spectrum CBD oil at 10,000mg in 30ml works out near three hundred and thirty milligrams a millilitre. An Orange County CBD oil at 25,000mg in 100ml is two hundred and fifty. And an Orange County 2000mg in 10ml matches this bottle exactly on concentration while containing an entirely different cannabinoid.

None of which makes this a weak product. The point is that twenty per cent reads as a headline figure and functions as a middle one, and that if concentration is what you are shopping for there are CBD oils above it with a far clearer regulatory position.

H4CBD is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid. It is made in a laboratory from CBD and it is not CBD, however similar the letters look. It holds no Novel Foods authorisation, it does not appear on the Food Standards Agency public list, and the UK position on supplying it is contested rather than settled.

That matters more for an oil than for almost anything else in this range, because an oil with a dropper is a format built to be swallowed, and Novel Foods is the regime that governs things you swallow. Who should not buy this

Anyone who thinks they are buying a strong CBD oil. They are not. This is a different molecule with a different regulatory position, and the CBD oils above it on the concentration table are the thing they actually want.

Anyone who wants to start small. Ten milligrams is the smallest amount this bottle can give you, because a drop does not divide. The 10 per cent halves that, and a CBD oil at fifty milligrams a millilitre takes it lower again.

Anyone who needs a settled legal position, or who would want to point at an authorisation. There is none for H4CBD in any format.

Anyone reassured by the words natural, pure and CO2 extracted on the label. Those words are doing real work in the description and the step they omit is the one that defines the product.

And anyone comparing this against the 10 per cent purely on the headline figure. The bottles hold the same number of drops. What you are choosing is the size of the smallest step you can take, and bigger is not automatically better.
