Full spectrum or broad spectrum? The market does not agree

Orange County's own product page states the oil is made using full-spectrum CBD, and lists the ingredients as full spectrum hemp-derived cannabidiol, MCT oil and terpenes. A specialist retailer sells it under the heading 1000mg Full Spectrum Oil. Our own catalogue records it as full spectrum.

Meanwhile the listing title on Boots describes this product as broad spectrum CBD oil, 1000mg, 30ml. A trade wholesaler does the same.

Only one of those can be right about a given bottle. Broad spectrum extract has been processed to remove THC. Full spectrum has not, and retains it deliberately as part of keeping the plant's compound profile intact. Every other difference between the two is a matter of taste and preference. This one is a matter of what is in the bottle.

We are not in a position to resolve it from published sources, and we are not going to pick whichever answer is more convenient. What we can do is tell you the disagreement exists, tell you which way our own supply is recorded, and be careful about what we claim as a result.

What full spectrum actually means here

Hemp extract comes in three grades and the names are unhelpfully similar. Isolate is refined until only cannabidiol remains. Broad spectrum keeps a wide range of hemp compounds but has the THC taken out during processing. Full spectrum keeps the range including the THC that occurs naturally in the plant.

Full spectrum is chosen deliberately. People who prefer it want the whole compound profile rather than a purified fraction, and the terpenes that give this oil its taste are part of the same picture. It is a legitimate preference and a large part of the market.

It also carries a consequence that broad spectrum and isolate do not. A full spectrum oil contains THC by design, and in the UK that runs into a specific limit, which is the next section.

The 1mg rule on a 30ml bottle, and what we will not tell you

A CBD product sold to a UK consumer must contain no more than 1mg of controlled cannabinoids in total, counting THC, THCV and CBN, per container. Per container, whatever its size, and not as a percentage of anything. It comes from the exempt product provisions under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

That per-container wording is what makes a 30ml full spectrum oil a demanding test rather than a formality. The whole bottle is assessed as one container, so the limit does not scale up with volume. A percentage that sounds small becomes a large absolute quantity once multiplied by 30ml, which is exactly why percentage figures are the wrong instrument and why we never publish one.

33mg a pipette, 1.65mg a drop

The brand and the specialist retailer agree exactly on the measurements, which is a welcome change from most of this category. A full pipette holds 33mg of CBD, and a single drop carries 1.65mg.

That per-drop figure is the reason people choose an oil over a gummy. Twenty drops is a full pipette, so you can move in increments of under 2mg, where a sweet commits you to whatever is in it. If you want to adjust slowly, this is the format built for it.

The base is MCT oil, a coconut-derived carrier that is the standard for CBD drops, and the terpenes are retained rather than stripped. Orange County describes its own 1000mg oil as unflavoured, with the terpenes providing the taste. On taste: Natural is earthy and grassy in the way a terpene-rich oil generally is, and it is the most divisive. Mint is the most effective at covering it. Apple and Cherry sweeten rather than mask, so the hemp note is still present underneath.

The Orange County oil range runs on three different grades

This is the thing nobody publishes and it changes how you read the whole shelf. Orange County does not use one extract grade across its oils. It uses three, and the bottle size tells you which more reliably than the milligram figure does.

The 500mg oils are broad spectrum. The 1000mg and 2000mg 10ml bottles are isolate. The 30ml and 100ml bottles from 1000mg upwards are full spectrum. So the same 1,000mg figure means isolate in a 10ml bottle and full spectrum in a 30ml one. Two products, one number, completely different extracts.

If the THC question matters to you, that is the most useful thing on this page. The 10ml 1000mg oil is the isolate version of the same strength, and the 500mg bottles are broad spectrum. Both avoid the issue this page has spent four sections on.

Who should not buy this one

If you want to avoid THC entirely, this is the wrong bottle. Full spectrum retains it by design, and the broad spectrum 500mg oils or the isolate 1000mg 10ml are the versions of this range built for that.
