Two thousand drops, and how long that lasts

Twelve thousand milligrams divided by six milligrams a drop gives about two thousand drops in a full bottle. That is not a marketing figure, it follows directly from what the brand publishes.

The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to take no more than 10mg of CBD a day from food supplements, a figure it revised down from a much higher earlier one in 2023. Take that as the benchmark and this bottle contains twelve hundred days of it, which is well over three years.

Even at intakes far above that advisory figure the arithmetic stays awkward. Ten drops a day, which is sixty milligrams, still runs to roughly two hundred days. That is more than six months of daily use from one bottle.

Neither the brand nor any shop selling this publishes a shelf life or a best before date, which on a container this size is a real omission. An oil is a fat, and fats do not improve with age once a bottle has been opened and repeatedly exposed to air.

None of this means the product is bad. It means the format asks a question the listings do not answer, and the answer for most people is that a smaller bottle finishes before it ages.

The drop size is constant, so you can work out any bottle in the range

Orange County publishes drop and pipette figures for some of its oils and not others, which makes comparing them harder than it needs to be. There is a shortcut hiding in the numbers it does publish.

This bottle is 12 per cent and gives 6mg in a drop. The 10ml at 10 per cent gives 5mg in a drop. Both give twenty drops to a full pipette. Work backwards and both imply the same drop size, roughly a twentieth of a millilitre.

So the rule is simple. Multiply the concentration by a twentieth of a millilitre and you have the milligrams in a drop for any bottle in the range. We have set the whole range out below on that basis, marking which figures the brand publishes and which follow from its own arithmetic.

Use this as a comparison aid rather than a dosing instruction. Real drop size varies a little with the pipette, how full it is and how you hold it, so read the derived numbers as close rather than exact.

The compliance sentence gets worse as the bottle gets bigger

There is a percentage figure that circulates across the UK CBD trade and gets printed on listings as though it were the legal test for a finished product. It is not, and this bottle is the clearest illustration of why.

The actual UK test is an absolute one. A container may hold no more than 1mg of controlled cannabinoids in total, counting THC, THCV and CBN together. Per container, as a quantity, whatever the container's size.

A percentage does not work that way. It scales. Apply the circulating figure to a 10ml bottle and it would permit roughly twenty times the quantity the law actually allows. Apply the same figure to this 100ml bottle and it permits roughly two hundred times.

So the identical sentence, on two products from the same brand, is ten times more wrong on the larger one purely because there is more liquid in it. A bigger container makes an absolute limit harder to meet, not easier, which is exactly backwards from how the percentage claim is used.

What the brand says about FSA approval, and why it does not hold

Orange County's own copy for this oil states that its full spectrum oils are cold-pressed and that FSA approval is therefore not required. That reasoning does not work, and it is worth being precise about why.

Cold pressing is a way of extracting oil without heat. It is a processing method, not a regulatory category, and no processing method removes a product from the scope of Novel Foods.

The exemption people are reaching for is a real one, but it applies to hemp seed oil. Hemp seed has a long history of food use in the UK and carries essentially no cannabinoids, so cold-pressed hemp seed oil is not a novel food. A 12 per cent cannabidiol extract is a different thing entirely, and the cannabinoid content is the whole reason Novel Foods applies to ingestible CBD in the first place.

The odd part is that the brand did not need the argument. Orange County has several hundred products validated on the FSA's public list, which is the mechanism that allows products to stay available while their safety assessment continues. That is a stronger position than the claim being made.

Two cautions on our side. Validation is not the same as authorisation, and it should not be described as approval either. And we have not verified that this particular bottle appears on that list, so we assert nothing about this specific product's status.

Full spectrum, and the figure we will not print

The ingredients are full spectrum hemp-derived cannabidiol, MCT oil and terpenes. Full spectrum means the extract keeps the plant's other compounds rather than having them stripped out, and that includes THC by design.

That is why this page carries no THC figure. On a container this size the 1mg limit is demanding, and we do not hold the per-batch certificate for the stock we would ship. We would rather say that plainly than repeat a number we cannot stand behind. Orange County does publish lab reports on its own site, which is more than most of the shops reselling this manage.

MCT oil is the carrier, usually a fraction of coconut oil. Cannabidiol will not dissolve in water and needs a fat to carry it, and MCT stays liquid at room temperature so a pipette behaves predictably, with little taste of its own.

There is no flavouring. Unflavoured means the taste of hemp extract in oil, and at 12 per cent that is more pronounced than in the weaker bottles. Expect something earthy and bitter with a grassy edge that stays on the tongue for a moment.

An award that belongs to a different bottle

Several shops selling this oil reprint a first place tincture award from a 2020 UK cannabis industry ceremony. It is a real award, and it is not this product's.

That 2020 award was won by Orange County's 6000mg oil, and the brand's own copy is clear that the 12,000mg is the same formulation made stronger rather than the winning product itself. Reprinting the accolade under the larger bottle is the kind of small slippage that happens when a dozen shops copy one supplier description.

This bottle does hold a tincture award of its own, taken at the same ceremony the following year. Which makes the confusion doubly unnecessary, since the accurate version is just as good.

One more thing the listings leave out. The brand's own shop currently shows this bottle as back-ordered with a lead time of a week and a half or more, while our distributors hold stock. Those are separate supply pools, and it is the second Orange County oil in a row where that is the case.

Who should not buy this

Almost anyone new to CBD. At 6mg a drop and two thousand drops in a bottle, this is a format for someone who already knows their routine and gets through a lot. The 500mg and 1,500mg bottles are where working that out belongs.

Anyone who wants a nil-THC position. This is full spectrum by design, we hold no certificate for the batch, and no honest figure is available. A broad spectrum or isolate product with a readable certificate is the safer route.

Anyone who takes CBD occasionally rather than daily. A container that outlasts three years at the advised intake is not a sensible pairing with irregular use, particularly with no published shelf life to work from.

And anyone buying on the strength of the milligram figure alone should read the range above. The 25,000mg 100ml is more concentrated, and two of the smaller bottles match or beat this one for strength in each drop.
