The specification is more interesting than any page selling it bothers to say. Independent retail listings describe the hemp papers as one hundred per cent hemp fibre, with thirty-two brown unbleached leaves in a booklet, a gumline of one hundred per cent Arabic gum, and no colourants or additives. The papers are made in Spain, which alongside France is where most of the world's rolling paper has been produced for a very long time.

The retailer page ranking highest for this brand gives none of that. It says the materials are high grade and responsibly sourced and stops. The brand's own UK site, which is really a head shop rather than a manufacturer's home, gives the Spanish origin and little else. So the specification above is assembled from several sources rather than lifted from one, which is worth knowing about how firm it is.

The rolling tray box is the other thing worth a look, because the brand makes it in six illustrated variants: Alien, Hypnotic, Monsters, Mushrooms, Psychedelic and Skulls. The Hash Incense is H4CBD, a semi-synthetic cannabinoid, and four things about how it is marketed need unpicking before you order.

The H4CBD Hash Incense is the odd one out and it needs unpicking carefully, because four separate things about how it is marketed are worth knowing before you order.

First, what it is. H4CBD is hydrogenated cannabidiol: hydrogen atoms added to the CBD molecule in a laboratory to produce a different, semi-synthetic compound. We list it because the owner of this business decided to after being shown the reasoning in full, and we would rather set it out here than let a product grid imply it is the same as the papers next to it.

Second, the incense framing. It is sold as incense, described for aromatherapy use and marketed to collectors. That is the same not-for-consumption device we found on another brand's hash pages. It is a legitimate way to sell a product and it is also a way of moving a compliance question sideways rather than answering it. You should know the framing is doing work.

Third, a legal claim that is simply wrong. At least one listing for the Black Afghan variety describes it as UK compliant under a THC percentage. That percentage is a cultivation rule governing how much THC is permitted in a growing hemp crop under a Home Office licence. It has never been the test for what may be sold to a person. The consumer test is one milligram of controlled cannabinoids in the container, whatever that container weighs.

Fourth, and most practically useful: the same product appears to be labelled two different ways across the trade. One distributor lists it as H4CBD Hash Incense at extreme high strength. Other retailers list the same strain names at almost the same weight as CBD Hash Incense at twenty per cent. Those are not the same substance and they do not sit in the same regulatory position. We cannot tell you from a listing which one you would receive, so we are telling you to read the pack, and we are asking our distributor to confirm which it is.

How Monkey King compares with the other paper brands we stock

So the practical answer: if you want one brand that can supply papers, tips, rolls, cones and a tray in a single order, this is the one. If you want the best example of any single one of those formats, another brand here probably has it.

Where Monkey King is strong, and where it is not

Strong on format coverage, specification and artwork; weak on a brand that is hard to pin down and one H4CBD line that drags questions in.

The paper specification, once you dig it out, is a proper one: thirty-two unbleached leaves, Arabic gum, no additives, Spanish manufacture. And the tray artwork has real illustration behind it, in a category where a lot of accessories are unbranded plastic, even if only one of the six designs is in stock today.

Against that: the brand is oddly hard to pin down. The site on the obvious domain is a head shop selling other people's lighters and ashtrays rather than a manufacturer's home, no founding story is published anywhere we could find, and the specification has to be assembled from retailers. The H4CBD line, for all four reasons above, attaches a wrong legal claim, an ambiguous cannabinoid label and an aromatherapy framing to an otherwise straightforward paper company. And everything here reaches us through a single distributor.

Where Monkey King sits under UK law

Nothing applies to the papers beyond the age restriction; the Hash Incense sits under the 1mg container rule and outside novel foods.

For the papers, rolls, cones and tray there is very little to say, which is the point: they contain no cannabinoid, so no cannabinoid rule applies to them. They are smoking accessories and they are 18+ like everything else here.

For the Hash Incense, the position is the one set out above. The UK consumer test is one milligram of controlled cannabinoids in the container, not a percentage, and the percentage figure attached to at least one listing of this product belongs to farming rules about a standing hemp crop rather than to anything sold in a shop.

H4CBD holds no Novel Foods authorisation, so no ingestible H4CBD product sits on the Food Standards Agency's validated list. Being sold as incense rather than as something to consume does not resolve that question, it moves it. We would rather say so than let the label do the arguing.
