Professor Herb Hemp Solid Extract 2g, Banana Pollen Hash 15%

Read the two ingredient lists side by side

Professor Herb sells two hash ranges that get shelved together and described in almost identical language. The one thing that separates them cleanly is the ingredients, and nobody puts them next to each other.

This 2g solid extract declares: hemp extract, terpenes. The 3.5g briquettes declare: hemp biomass, terpenes and flavourings.

Two differences, both meaningful. The first word changes from biomass to extract, which is the difference between bulk plant material and a concentrated fraction taken out of it. And flavourings disappear from the list entirely.

The point on this page is simpler and more useful: when the same maker labels two products differently, the label is usually the most reliable thing on the pack, and it is telling you these are not the same kind of material.

So where does the banana come from

If no flavourings are declared, and the ingredients are hemp extract and terpenes, then the banana aroma has to be coming from the terpenes. That is a more interesting answer than it sounds.

It means the profile here is built from aroma compounds rather than from the broader category of flavourings that the briquette range uses. Whether those terpenes were taken from cannabis or from other plants is not stated anywhere, which is a question worth understanding and one we have set out properly on our Tangerine Dream page, including why the source can genuinely change what something smells like.

In practice the banana is soft and slightly creamy rather than the sharp artificial banana of a sweet. There is a ripe, faintly sulphurous edge that real bananas have and confectionery versions usually leave out, sitting over the earthy, resinous base of the extract itself. It is one of the more convincing fruit profiles we have come across in this format.

The base material comes through more than it does on a flavoured briquette, which follows: a concentrated extract has more of its own character to assert.

What the name is doing, and it is not what we first assumed

Across the briquette range the ribbon always named a flavour and never told you anything about the material. In this 2g range the naming works differently, though not as neatly as it first appears.

Most of the range is named for how the material was made or where the style comes from. Bubble Hash refers to ice-water extraction. Olandese points at a Dutch style. Moroccan and Red Lebanon are regional traditions. Those names carry real information about the product.

Pollen is also a production term rather than a flavour, referring to sifted resin. But the 15 per cent pollen tier then has flavour names attached to it, and Banana is one of at least three: the brand also makes Cheesecake Pollen Hash and Cookies Pollen Hash at the same stated percentage. So the honest summary is that in this range the name usually tells you something substantive, and at the 15 per cent tier it tells you the grade plus a flavour. That is worth knowing if you are comparing across the shelf, because it means Banana Pollen and Cookies Pollen are the same material with different aromas, while Bubble and Moroccan are genuinely different products.

The strength flash finally means something

A small thing that is worth recording, because we criticised the other half of it.

The briquette cards carry a flash reading HIGH STRENGTH, and we pointed out on our Wedding Cake page that at 175mg in 3.5g the briquette runs at the same concentration as the brand's own loose blend, so the flash distinguished it from nothing.

This card reads EXTRA HIGH STRENGTH, and here the wording is doing real work. A stated 15 per cent against the briquette's five is a genuine three-fold difference, and it is the largest gap between any two things in the brand's hash line-up. Whatever we think of the first flash, the second one is earned.

The card also reads SOLID EXTRACT where the briquettes read HEMP BRIQUETTE, so the packaging does separate the ranges clearly once you know to look. It is the listings that blur them.

Two things to check before you order

The first is that Professor Herb runs a second solid extract line at the same 2g size containing H4CBD rather than CBD. They look similar, they are shelved together, and they are not the same thing at all. This product is the hemp and CBD one. The second is our own catalogue. The stated percentage appears in this product's name but our product record carries no strength figure for it, which is a data gap on our side rather than anything to do with the pack. It has been logged for correction and it changes nothing about what you receive.

This range is on our site on an explicit decision by the owner of this business. Smokable hemp sits outside the industrial hemp cultivation licence, which covers stalk and seed, and we would rather say so than leave it out.

Who should pick something else

If you want the mildest thing on this shelf, a stated 15 per cent is three times the briquettes and this is not it. The briquette range is the gentler starting point.

If you want the strongest in this particular range, this sits at the bottom of the five. The Moroccan at a stated 22 per cent is the top of the ladder.

If a fruit aroma on a concentrated extract does not appeal, the unflavoured regional grades in this range are the ones to look at, since their character comes from the material rather than from anything added.

If you have not used a solid extract before, be aware it behaves differently from a pressed briquette when warmed, and the technique that works for one is not identical for the other.
