What the number on the front of the pack actually means

Read a gummy shelf quickly and the strengths look chaotic. A Blazed jelly says 10mg. An Orange County tub says 4800mg. Nothing on either pack hints that the two might be closer than they appear.

The front-of-pack figure is the total amount of CBD in the container. The number that governs what you actually eat is that total divided by the pieces inside. Orange County prints both: its 400mg bag holds 20 gummies with 20mg in each. Hempthy's 1000mg high-strength bag holds 50 pieces, again 20mg apiece. Its 900mg cola bottles come as a pack of 30, so 30mg each. Three very different headline numbers, three packs that portion out within ten milligrams of one another.

Which is why a 4800mg tub is not a trap waiting for a beginner, and a 10mg jelly is not a rounding error. One is a large bag portioned normally. The other is a single sweet meant as a first try and nothing more.

So there are only two figures worth carrying between brands: the total, and the piece count. Where a brand does not print the piece count on the front, it is on the product page. Where it appears nowhere at all, that tells you something about the brand.

For a sense of what is sensible across a day rather than in one sweet, the Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to keep CBD from food supplements to 10mg a day. That figure was revised down from 70mg in February 2023, and a striking number of UK CBD pages still quote the old one, including two of the four pages currently ranking above this one. It is guidance rather than a dosage instruction, but it is the right thing to read before choosing a strength.

Every gummy brand in this aisle, side by side

No brand-owned CBD site can publish the table below, and that is the honest reason this page exists. Orange County will never tell you when Hempthy suits you better, because Orange County does not stock Hempthy. Isolate or broad spectrum, and why the choice is simpler here than in oil

Two extract types appear in this aisle and no more. Most ranges use CBD isolate. Orange County uses broad spectrum across most of its gummies. Full spectrum, the grade that deliberately retains trace THC, does not appear in this aisle at all, which removes the most common source of confusion before it starts.

Isolate is CBD on its own, separated from everything else in the plant. Broad spectrum keeps the wider set of hemp compounds and has the THC removed afterwards. In an oil you can sometimes taste the difference between the two immediately. In a gummy the flavouring does most of the talking, so the practical difference is narrower than the marketing suggests.

The one case where it genuinely matters is workplace testing. Neither type is made with detectable THC, but isolate is the shorter conversation to have with an employer, because there is nothing else in it. If that applies to you, take the isolate row and keep the batch lab report for the pack you bought.

Not everything in a gummy aisle is CBD

Five ranges on this page are not CBD gummies, and we would rather say so at the top of the category than let you find out on a product page. They are the Dr Trichome mix, the H Bomb 2000mg mix, the Resident Dank 2400mg mix, and two Euphoria lines. All five are H4CBD.

H4CBD is hydrogenated CBD. It is made by taking CBD and adding hydrogen to it in a laboratory, which produces a related but different molecule, so it is fair to call it semi-synthetic and unfair to call it CBD. It is sold because people report it as noticeably stronger than CBD, and it holds no Food Standards Agency Novel Foods authorisation, which every ingestible CBD product on this page is required to work towards.

We stock these lines because our buyer chose to, after being shown that argument in full. What we will not do is shelve them quietly among the CBD ranges and let the packaging blur the distinction, which is roughly what the rest of the UK market does. Anything with H4 in the name is H4CBD. If you came here for CBD, avoid those five and everything else on the page is what you were looking for.

Bears, worms, cubes, cola bottles and pick-n-mix

Once you have settled on a strength, the rest of the decision is confectionery, and it is worth taking seriously because a sweet you do not enjoy is a sweet you stop eating. The aisle divides into ordinary gummies and jellies, and within the gummies into four families.

Fizzy and sour is the largest by a distance. Aztec builds almost its entire range on it, with fizzy bears, fizzy bottles, fizzy cherries and dew drops, and Hempthy runs fizzy bears and fizzy sour peaches at three strengths. The sour coating is sugar, so if you are watching that, this is the family to skip.

Plain fruit gummies are the quieter option: Cannapower's bears, cherries, fruit cubes, peach rings and strawberries, MediCBD's and Multitrance's bears in passion fruit and strawberry, and Orange County's bears and cubes. Nostalgia shapes sit next to them, which is what Aztec's dummies and Hempthy's cola bottles are doing there. Then there is pick-n-mix, Hempthy's answer to not being able to decide, at 300mg, 1000mg and 1200mg.

Jellies are their own sub-shelf and currently hold one line, the Blazed mixed fruit 10mg jelly. Softer set, no sour coating, and small enough to try without commitment.

A practical note on flavour ranges. Orange County lists up to five flavours at a given strength, so a 1200mg bag can be bought as cherries, bears, cubes, worms or a mix without changing the portion. Aztec does the same trick in reverse, holding one strength and varying the shape. If you already know what you like, start from the brand that varies the thing you care about.

The UK law that applies to a bag of CBD gummies

A CBD gummy can be sold legally in the UK when it contains no more than 1mg of controlled cannabinoids in the whole container, is made from a permitted hemp source, and meets UK food law, which for an ingestible CBD product includes the Novel Foods regime.

Read that first clause again, because it is the part almost every page gets wrong. The test is per container. Not per sweet, not per serving, and not a percentage of anything. A 4800mg tub is allowed exactly the same 1mg as a 10mg jelly. Nothing about buying a bigger bag buys you a bigger allowance.

The 0.2 percent figure you will have seen quoted on other CBD pages is a real number, but it belongs to a different rulebook. It is a limit on the standing crop, applied to hemp grown under a Home Office cultivation licence, and it describes what a farmer may grow rather than what a shop may sell. Apply it to a finished product and the arithmetic falls apart at once: a percentage rule on a 200g bag of sweets would permit hundreds of milligrams of THC, which is hundreds of times the actual limit. That is the test being quoted as though it protects you, on pages ranking in the top five for this search.

Novel Foods is the second half of the picture and it applies specifically to things you swallow. Since 2021 the Food Standards Agency has run a public list of CBD food products that have submitted a validated authorisation dossier, and gummies fall squarely inside that regime. CBD vapes and topicals sit outside it, so a claim about Novel Foods status on one of those tells you nothing. H4CBD holds no authorisation at all, which is the third reason those five lines are flagged rather than blended in.

The rest is straightforward and worth repeating anyway. These are over-18s products. They are food supplements, not medicines, and nobody selling them may tell you what they do for a health condition. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking prescription medication, speak to a GP or pharmacist before starting, because CBD interacts with some drugs through the same liver enzymes that process them.

Vegan, sugar-free, and what to read on the ingredients panel

A fruit-shaped sweet tells you nothing about what it is made of. The two things worth checking before ordering are the gelling agent and the sugar.

Orange County prints a vegan mark on its gummy bags, which use pectin instead of gelatine. Most other ranges in this aisle are conventional gelatine sweets, and gelatine is rarely announced on the front of a pack. The ingredients panel on each product page is the place to settle it, and if a listing does not show one, ask us before you order rather than after.

Sugar is the other one. A sour or fizzy coating is sugar, so the fizzy families are the sweetest things in the aisle. Hempthy's sugar-free gummies, at 300mg and 1000mg, are the only line here made without it. Sugar-free confectionery normally uses polyols instead, which carry the usual advisory about eating a lot of them in one sitting, so it is not quite a straight swap for the sugared version.

Beyond those two: check the allergen line if you are gluten sensitive, since some ranges are dusted with starch and some are not, and check whether colours are natural or synthetic if that matters to you. None of this is exotic food-label reading. It is the same panel you would check on any other bag of sweets, and CBD does not change the rules.

Who should skip this aisle

Gummies are the easiest CBD format to start with and the wrong one for several perfectly ordinary reasons. Saying so is the part most CBD pages leave out.

If you want to adjust the amount you take in small steps, buy oil instead. A gummy is fixed at whatever it was made at, and the only adjustment available is a whole sweet or half a sticky one. Oil moves a drop at a time and our CBD oil aisle is built for exactly that.

If you want something that works through the lining of the mouth rather than the gut, gummies are the slow option by design. Chewing gum and mints in the CBD sweets aisle absorb faster because they never reach the stomach in the same way.

If sugar is off the table and the sugar-free line does not appeal, there is no third option here worth pretending about. Capsules and oil have no sugar in them at all.

If your job involves regular drug testing, the conservative move is an isolate line and a saved copy of the batch report, or no ingestible at all if your employer's policy is strict. We cannot promise you a test result and neither can anyone else selling these.

Storing them, and how long a bag keeps

Gummies are the CBD format most affected by where you leave them. Gelatine and pectin both soften above room temperature, and a bag left on a windowsill or in a car in July arrives as one fused lump. That is not only unpleasant. Once the pieces have merged you have lost the piece count, and with it the only reliable way of knowing how much you are eating, which is the entire advantage the format had over oil.

Keep them sealed, cool and out of direct light. A cupboard is fine, the fridge is unnecessary, and the freezer is a bad idea because thawing pulls moisture into the sour coating and turns it to syrup. Reseal the bag properly: sweets that dry out go hard rather than dangerous, but nobody enjoys them.

On dates, we buy stock to order rather than holding it, so what arrives has usually come from the distributor within days. Where a line is being sold with a short best-before date, that is stated on its product page, and it is worth reading if you are buying a 4800mg tub you expect to work through slowly. A large container only makes sense if you will finish it comfortably inside its date.

CBD itself degrades slowly with heat and light rather than falling off a cliff, so a bag stored sensibly and eaten within its date does what the label says. A bag cooked on a dashboard is a different question, and not one a laboratory report from six months earlier can answer for you.
