Bubble hash names the method, not the quality

This is the thing nobody selling bubble hash in the UK explains, and it is the question anyone comparing two of them actually has.

Ice-water separation does not produce one product. A single wash produces several fractions, caught in a stack of mesh bags with progressively finer holes, and each bag holds something different. What a producer keeps, and what they blend together, determines what ends up in the pot.

The bags are measured in microns. The material collected around 90 to 120 microns tends to hold the most mature, intact resin heads with the least plant debris, and that is where the highest grades come from. Some producers put the sweet spot slightly finer, at 73 to 90. Coarser bags at 160 microns, and the finest at 73, more often yield mid-grade material carrying more plant fragments.

Micron size is not the whole story either. The variety washed, the technique, whether the result was freeze dried, how mature the resin was and how clean the trichomes were all move the outcome. Two producers running the same method on the same day can finish a long way apart.

So bubble hash is a description of process, in the same way that baked describes a method rather than telling you whether something is any good. It is an accurate label on both of the products we sell under it, and it explains the distance between them without either being mislabelled.

The grading vocabulary, and where it comes from

Hash is often described in stars, from one to six, and in terms of melt. Five and six star material is called full melt, three and four star is half melt, and the lower end is not usually described in those terms at all.

One thing worth saying plainly before going further: this vocabulary comes out of THC hash culture, where grading is driven largely by potency and by how cleanly material behaves in a dab. Applied to a CBD product it still describes the resin fraction accurately, but a lower stated percentage on a hemp hash is not a defect and does not mean anything was done badly. It describes what fraction of the plant ended up in the pot, and mild material has its place.

The reason melt is used as the test is straightforward. Pure resin liquefies cleanly when heated. Plant fragments do not, so they stay behind as residue. How much residue is left is therefore a rough measure of how much of what you have is resin and how much is everything else.

How to judge what actually arrives

The useful version of all this is that you can assess a piece of hash yourself, with no equipment, and it is worth knowing how.

Colour is the first cue. Higher grades tend towards light tan or golden. Darker material generally means more plant matter came through, or that the resin has oxidised with age and exposure.

Texture is the second. Cleaner resin tends to be pliable and to soften with handling. Dry, crumbly material that shatters rather than yielding usually carries more plant fragment.

Melt is the most direct test and needs nothing more than heat. Resin liquefies; plant material does not and stays behind as a residue. The proportion left is the answer.

We should be straight about one thing here, because we have just given you a colour cue and there is a photograph further up this page. The brand's own image for this grade shows darker, crumblier-looking material than its lighter pollen grade does. We are not going to draw a conclusion from that, and neither should anyone else: a styled marketing photograph of one batch, under studio lighting, is not a grading assessment. The cues above are for the piece in your hand, not for a picture. If what arrives does not match what you expected, that is a conversation with whoever sold it to you, ourselves included.

Where this sits in the Professor Herb range

Of the five 2g solid extracts the brand makes, this one is stated at 19 per cent, which puts it fourth of five. The Moroccan at 22 per cent is the highest, and the flavoured pollen grades at 15 per cent are the lowest.

Unlike those pollen grades this one carries no flavour name, which follows from what it is: the character comes from the material and the method rather than from an added profile. In the pot it is a firm, dark, resinous material with an earthy, slightly spicy aroma and none of the fruit or confectionery notes that run through the briquette range. It softens with warmth and handling. If you have only used the flavoured products from this brand, this is a noticeably plainer and more traditional thing.

One practical note on the packaging. The card has a fold-out back so it can stand upright on a shop counter, and the material sits in a clear pot on the front. This range is on our site on an explicit decision by the owner of this business. Smokable hemp sits outside the industrial hemp cultivation licence, which covers stalk and seed, and we would rather state that than leave it out.

Who should choose differently

If you want a flavoured product, this is not one. The pollen grades in this range carry fruit and dessert profiles and the briquette range carries fourteen of them.

If you want the highest stated figure on our hemp and hash shelf, this is not it either. Several products state considerably more, and the table above is the quickest way to see the spread.

If you have never used a solid extract, be aware it behaves differently from a pressed briquette when warmed, and it is easy to use more than you meant to because the material is denser.

If you are buying on the strength of the words bubble hash alone, read the first section again. The term tells you how it was separated and very little about what grade you are getting.
