A moonrock is a recipe, not a variety

Most cannabis-derived names describe a plant. Moonrock does not. It describes an assembly, and a specific one with three layers.

You start with flower as the base. You dip or coat it in a concentrate, typically a hash oil or distillate. Then you roll the coated bud in kief, the sifted resin powder, so it sets into a dense crust on the outside. The result looks like a lump of rock, hence the name, and every layer after the first exists to add concentrate on top of concentrate.

That is the entire point of the format. A moonrock is a way of stacking so that a finished gram carries far more than the flower it started as. Figures quoted for the THC versions run past fifty per cent by weight, which is why every source describing them frames them as a format for people who already know what they are doing.

To be completely clear, because the name invites the confusion: that is a description of cannabis moonrocks, and this pack is nothing of the sort. It is a pressed hemp product with a stated 175mg in 3.5g. We are explaining where a word came from, not describing what is in the pot.

And the Cookies half is the flower the first one was built on

This is the part that makes the ribbon worth reading properly. The branded product that fixed moonrocks in the market appeared around 2013 to 2014, from the rapper Kurupt and his collaborator Dr. Zodiak. The original formulation used Girl Scout Cookies flower as its base, coated in hash oil and rolled in kief.

So Moonrock Cookies is not two flavour words stuck together. It is the build and the flower it was built on, which is to say the original recipe, compressed into two words on a ribbon. It is the most specific reference in the whole range, and it is printed on a product where nobody selling it mentions any of it.

Girl Scout Cookies itself turns up elsewhere in our range as a flavour name on an Orange County distillate pod, which is a fair indication of how far that particular lineage has travelled as a marketing term.

What it does not tell you is anything about this pack. The stated ingredients are hemp material, terpenes and flavourings, so as with every ribbon in this range the name describes an aroma profile that has been added rather than the plant the material came from.

One pressed material, not three layered ones

The structural difference is worth stating plainly once. A moonrock is three separate materials assembled in sequence, each one added to raise what the finished piece carries. A briquette is a single material heat-pressed into a block, with terpenes and flavourings infused rather than layered.

Neither is a criticism of the other, and they are not competing formats. They are simply built in opposite directions: one by adding concentrate, the other by compressing what is already there. Why you will not find a CBD moonrock in Britain

This is the obvious follow-up question and nobody in UK CBD retail asks it. Our reading, and we are labelling it as reasoning rather than a legal ruling, is that the format works against the rule it would have to satisfy.

A moonrock exists to multiply what a gram carries. But the test a finished product has to meet in the UK is the total quantity of controlled cannabinoids in the container, counted together. Concentrating the useful part of the plant concentrates everything else along with it, including the trace controlled compounds, so a format whose defining feature is stacking concentration is pushing in exactly the wrong direction for a product that has to keep a total down.

There is a second problem before you even get to that. The base layer is flower, and smokable hemp flower sits outside the industrial hemp cultivation licence, which covers stalk and seed rather than the flowering material. We do not sell CBD flower for that reason. So the bottom layer of the build is already difficult in this market before the other two are applied to it.

Put the two together and the format is hard to produce here in anything like its original form. Which is a reasonable explanation for why the name shows up as a flavour on a pressed briquette rather than as a product in its own right.

What the flavour is actually like

Given the name, the flavour is more restrained than you might expect. It sits in the baked-goods register rather than the fruit one: sweet dough, a light brown-sugar warmth, and a biscuity note that reads more like shortbread than anything chocolatey.

Underneath there is an earthiness that the fruit flavours in this range do not have, which suits the reference and gives it more grounding than the confectionery profiles. It is closest to Wedding Cake among the ones we stock, but drier and less vanilla-forward, with less of the icing-sugar sweetness.

The pressed hemp base comes through clearly, and in this flavour that works in its favour, because a green resinous note sits naturally alongside a baked one. Of the eight flavours we carry this is one of the two least sweet, which makes it a reasonable choice for anyone who has found the rest of the range too much like a sweet shop.

The aroma out of the pot is warm and slightly savoury at the edges. As with every flavour in this range it carries, so nobody should expect it to be discreet.

Who should pick something else

If the name drew you in because you were looking for the format, this is not it and we would rather say so before you order. It is a flavour reference on a pressed briquette.

If you want something bright and fruity, this is at the opposite end of the range. Pineapple Express or Guava Dog are the tropical options and Forbidden Fruit is the dark-fruit one.

If you want something ready to use as it comes, a briquette is a solid block and has to be broken down first. The loose Premium Hemp Blend is the same material without that step.
