Monkey King Rolling Tray Box with Hemp Cones

What the box is, and what it does

It is a hinged metal box that opens out into a full-size rolling tray, which is a more useful object than either a plain tray or a plain tin.

The published dimensions are 195 by 155 by 55 millimetres, which puts it in the small-to-medium bracket by the conventions UK retailers use. That is deliberate. A large tray at 34 by 27 centimetres is a table object you leave at home. This one closes and travels, and the depth is where the rest of the design lives.

Inside there are two built-in cone holders that keep pre-rolls upright and undamaged, and an elastic band across the lid that holds papers, tips or filters flat rather than letting them slide about. The tray surface itself has the raised lip that stops loose material going onto the carpet, which is the entire reason trays exist.

Metal is the right material for this job. It is the most durable of the four common tray materials, it does not warp like wood or crack like moulded plastic, and it takes printed artwork well, which is why almost every designed tray on the market is metal. The trade-off is noise: a metal box is not a discreet object to open.

The cones inside, specified properly for once

This is the part no page selling this box will tell you, so we went and got it from the manufacturer's own cone listing.

The cones are King Size Slim, 108 millimetres long by 44 millimetres, made from 100 per cent hemp fibre, and they arrive with a filter already fitted at 60 by 20 millimetres. The paper is 14gsm, which is the ultra-thin end of the scale and the reason hemp cones burn slowly and evenly rather than running down one side. Monkey King states its papers are crafted in Spain.

They come in packs of three, and several packs sit inside the box. We are confirming exactly what our listing ships as with our distributor rather than repeating a number from a shop selling a different unit, so if the quantity decides your purchase, ask us before ordering and we will tell you what we hold.

One thing worth saying plainly, because it comes up on every accessory in this aisle: there is no CBD in any of this. Hemp here means the plant fibre the paper is made from, not an extract, and a hemp cone contains no cannabinoid of any kind. The artwork is the only difference between them. The box, the tray, the holders and the cones are identical across the range, so this is purely a question of which lid you want to look at. They are illustrated in the same loud cartoon style the brand uses across its papers, and none of them is subtle.

How it compares with the other trays we stock

The short version: this is the only one that closes and the only one that comes with anything inside it. If you want a plain surface to roll on at a table, a flat tray is lighter, simpler to replace and easier to wipe down. If you want something that holds a session's worth of kit and shuts, this is the one.

Why a tray is worth having at all

If you have never used one, the case for a tray is duller than the artwork suggests and it comes down to two things.

The first is recovery. A raised lip catches everything you drop, and over a few months that adds up to a meaningful amount of material that would otherwise be on the floor. That is the whole reason trays became standard.

The second is that rolling on a flat, slightly textured, contained surface is simply easier than rolling on a table, a book or your lap. Papers do not slide, filters do not roll away, and you are not chasing anything.

The box format adds a third: everything lives in one place. Papers, filters, a lighter and pre-rolls all travel together and none of it gets crushed at the bottom of a bag, which is the specific problem the two cone holders exist to solve.

It is also the reason these sell as gifts. A tray box in a loud design is a straightforward present for someone who already rolls, which is how most of the shops selling it position the product.

Looking after a metal tray box

Metal trays are close to indestructible but the printed surface is not, and almost every complaint about a designed tray comes down to how it was cleaned.

Wipe it with a dry cloth or a barely damp one. Printed artwork on metal sits on the surface, and abrasive cleaners, scouring pads or alcohol wipes will take the design off long before the metal shows any wear.

Do not soak it. Water sitting in the hinge is the one way to get rust into a box like this, and a hinge that has rusted will not come back.

Keep papers and cones inside it rather than loose in a bag. That is what the elastic band and the holders are for, and a cone stored upright in a holder survives a rucksack in a way a cone loose in a pocket does not.

Who should buy something else
