What is actually in the stick

An incense stick is a thin bamboo core coated in a paste of powdered wood, resin and binder, then scented. The scent is what the name on the packet refers to. On this line the name refers to cannabis and cannabis strain profiles, and the material doing the work is fragrance, not plant matter from a cannabis crop.

Multitrance, the Amsterdam company behind the HaZe Holland brand, states its cannabis incense is THC free. Nothing in the range carries a stated CBD figure either, because none is added. If you came here looking for a cannabinoid, this is the wrong aisle and the CBD ranges linked at the foot of the page are the right one.

That matters more than it sounds. A buyer who assumes a cannabis-named product contains cannabis is a buyer who will be disappointed by the purchase or, worse, worried about it. Six UK product pages for this category, some of them running to several hundred words about mindfulness and hand rolling, and none of them spends one sentence saying what is or is not in the stick. It is the easiest question in the category to answer and nobody answers it.

So, plainly: this is a home fragrance product. You burn it in a holder, it scents a room for half an hour or so, and it has no cannabinoid content and no psychoactive effect of any kind.

Cannabis incense and herbal incense are not the same product

This is the section we most wanted to write, because the confusion behind it is genuine and no retailer in the ranking set touches it.

For years, smokable blends of dried plant material sprayed with lab-made synthetic cannabinoids were sold in the UK under names like Spice, Black Mamba and K2, and they were marketed as herbal incense with not for human consumption printed on the label in tiny type. That labelling was a workaround, not a description. Supplying those products has been an offence in the UK since the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016 came into force.

A cannabis scented incense stick shares nothing with that except a word. It is a fragrance stick you burn in a holder to scent a room, it contains no synthetic cannabinoid and no cannabinoid of any kind, and it is an ordinary home fragrance product sold legally across Europe.

If a listing anywhere ever suggests that an incense product is for smoking, that is the point to close the tab. Incense is burned in a holder, in a ventilated room, and it is never inhaled deliberately.

Made in the EU, not hand rolled in India

Five of the six UK cannabis incense pages we read sell Indian masala incense, hand rolled and usually 20 sticks to a box. This is a different product from a different production tradition, and the difference is real enough to be worth stating.

The HaZe line is produced in the European Union to a machine-consistent format. Multitrance publishes fifteen sticks per pack and a burn time of thirty to forty-five minutes per stick, and a trade listing for the same line quotes about thirty minutes. Indian masala incense, by contrast, is hand rolled, so stick thickness and therefore burn time vary from one stick to the next within the same box.

Neither approach is better in the abstract. Hand-rolled masala incense has a denser, smokier character that some people prefer. Machine-made EU incense is more predictable, which is what you want if you burn one at the same point every evening and would rather it behaved the same way each time.

On pack format, a note on the listing title. This product is titled as a six pack because Multitrance sells the range to trade in a display of six packs, each pack holding fifteen sticks. How to burn one properly

Only one page in the ranking set gives burn guidance at all, so this is worth covering properly rather than assuming.

Put the bare end of the stick into an incense holder or ash catcher made of ceramic, metal, stone or wood. Light the coated tip, let the flame catch for a few seconds, then blow it out so the tip is glowing red rather than burning with a flame. That glow is what carries the scent. A stick left with a live flame will burn through in minutes and smell of smoke rather than of anything you chose.

Burn it in a ventilated room. A window on the latch or a door ajar is enough. Incense smoke is smoke, and a closed unventilated room will irritate your throat regardless of how pleasant the fragrance is.

Never leave a burning stick unattended, never burn one while you sleep, and keep the holder clear of curtains, paper and anything else that catches. A single stick drops a surprising amount of hot ash, which is the reason the ash catcher exists rather than a decorative preference.

If you want a smaller fragrance footprint, snap a stick in half before lighting it. Fifteen minutes of scent in a small room is often plenty, and a whole stick in a bedroom can be too much.

Where the law actually sits on this

There is nothing controlled in a cannabis scented incense stick, so the legal position is straightforward: it is a home fragrance product and it is sold legally in the UK. We still keep it behind an 18+ check because of the branding, which is more than most of the shops selling it bother with.

Because people arrive at cannabis-branded products carrying half-remembered rules, one correction is worth making here even though it does not apply to this product. The figure you will see repeated across UK CBD pages, that a product is legal if it contains under a fifth of a percent THC, is not the consumer test and never has been. That percentage is a Home Office cultivation rule about a growing hemp crop in a field.

The rule that governs what may be sold to you is a limit of one milligram of controlled cannabinoids per container, whatever the container's size and whatever the percentage works out at. None of that constrains an incense stick, which contains no cannabinoid at all. It matters when you move from this aisle to the CBD ones, and it is the single most commonly misstated fact in UK CBD retail.
