RAW Classic Rolling Tray, Small

The three sizes nest inside each other

RAW publishes dimensions for the whole Classic tray family, and they are worth reading together rather than one at a time.

The large is 14 by 11 inches. The small, this one, is 11 by 7. The mini is 7.25 by 5.

Look at those numbers again. The small's long edge is 11 inches, which is exactly the large's short edge. The mini's long edge is 7.25 inches, which is essentially the small's short edge of 7. The ladder nests, each tray being roughly the width of the one above it, and once you have seen that you never need to look up a tray size again.

It also tells you what the step actually buys you. Going from small to large does not make the tray a bit bigger. It roughly doubles the working area, because you are adding a whole tray's width to the length.

The depth ladder is the specification nobody compares and it matters more than people expect. The mini has a 0.6 inch lip, the small an inch, the large an inch and a quarter. That lip is the only thing between your ground material and the carpet, and on the mini it is genuinely shallow.

Why the measurements you find elsewhere will not agree

If you go looking for the size of this tray you will find several different answers, and they are mostly the same answer in disguise.

RAW itself publishes inches, and only inches, for every tray it makes. Our distributor publishes the mini and the small in inches, then switches to centimetres for the large and the extra large. Those figures convert correctly, so nothing is wrong, but the effect is that half the range cannot be compared with the other half without a calculator.

Then there is rounding. At least one retailer in the ranking set publishes this tray as 10.75 by 7 inches where everyone else, including RAW, says 11 by 7. A quarter of an inch is nothing in practice, but it is enough to make you wonder whether you are looking at the same product, which is why we have put both units in the table above.

The practical version: this tray is a little under 28cm long and a little under 18cm wide. That is roughly A4 length and slightly narrower, which is the comparison most people find easiest.

The hemp in the name is the picture on it

This is worth clearing up because the product name actively misleads.

The tray is metal. Our distributor's own listing says so plainly, giving the design as RAW Classic and the material as metal, and every retailer selling it describes a metal tray with rounded corners.

What the name is referring to is the artwork. The surface carries the design from RAW's classic rolling paper packs, the unbleached hemp ones the brand built itself on, reproduced across the tray. So there is hemp in the picture and none in the object.

That distinction matters more with RAW than with most brands, because RAW genuinely does make trays out of plant material. There is a wooden tray in acacia and a bamboo Backflip tray with a lid. If you want a tray that is actually made of something that grew, those exist and this is not one of them.

One pleasing detail while we are on acacia. RAW notes that the acacia in its wooden tray is the same tree that supplies the gum strip on its papers, which is the natural adhesive we wrote about on our RAW x Lyrical papers listing. The brand is more consistent about its materials than the naming here suggests.

RAW makes twenty-six trays and we stock one of them

Worth saying plainly, because the RAW tray range is enormous and a buyer arriving from a search will have seen a fraction of it.

Our distributor's catalogue carries twenty-six distinct RAW trays. There are the Classic and Black designs, several camouflage patterns, a Monster Sesh limited edition, Zombie, Donut, Daze of the Week, a skateboard-shaped one, the Murder'd matte black, a Dab tray with a silicone cover, the acacia wooden tray, the bamboo Backflip, and an XXL lap tray with legs that measures 38.5 by 51 centimetres.

We carry this one. That is a curation decision rather than an availability problem, and the Classic in small is the sensible single choice: it is the design the brand is known for, at the size most people actually use.

Living with a printed metal tray

A few things specific to this one rather than to trays in general, which our Smoke Arsenal and Monkey King listings already cover.

The corners are rounded rather than square, which is the detail that makes a metal tray usable. Square internal corners trap material and you end up scraping at them; rounded ones let you sweep everything to one end and tip it out.

The finish is a printed surface on metal, so it is smooth and easy to wipe, and it will scratch if you use anything abrasive on it. The artwork is under the finish rather than a sticker, but it is not indestructible, and a tray used as a chopping surface will look like one within a year.

At an inch deep this holds enough to be forgiving. It is not so deep that reaching in is awkward, and not so shallow that a knocked tray empties itself, which is the main argument for the small over the mini.

There is no cannabinoid in it. It is a metal tray, and nothing in the UK rules covering CBD products has anything to do with one. Everything on this site is 18+ only.

Who should buy a different tray

Anyone who wants something made of plant material. RAW's acacia and bamboo trays exist and this is metal with a hemp picture on it.

Anyone rolling for more than one person, or who likes to lay out papers, tips, grinder and material at once. The large roughly doubles the area and the extra inch and a quarter of depth helps.

Anyone who wants a tray that fits in a bag. Eleven inches does not, and the mini is the one designed for that, with a shallower lip as the trade-off.

Anyone who wants a specific design. This is the Classic artwork only, and there are two dozen other RAW designs we do not stock.

And anyone expecting a tray to do something a tray cannot. It is a flat metal surface with a lip. It keeps material off the table and makes tidying up quick, and that is the entire proposition.
