333mg a millilitre, and why the biggest number is not the strongest oil

A bottle total tells you how much you were sold. It tells you almost nothing about what you are taking, because a large bottle with a large number in it can be weaker in the spoon than a small bottle with a smaller one.

Ten thousand milligrams across thirty millilitres works out at 333mg in each millilitre. That is the figure that describes the oil.

Now run the same calculation across our range and something counterintuitive appears. Orange County sells an oil carrying 25,000mg, which is two and a half times the number on this bottle. But it is a 100ml bottle, so it works out at 250mg a millilitre, which is less concentrated than this one. Its 12,000mg bottle is 120mg a millilitre, roughly a third of this.

So the most concentrated oil we stock is not the one with the biggest number on it. That is not a criticism of anybody's labelling, since both figures are perfectly accurate. It is simply that the two numbers answer different questions, and only one of them is the question you actually have.

Read the last column of the table below rather than the headline. If you are moving between oils, matching per-millilitre concentration is what keeps you in the same place.

Drops are the wrong unit for an oil this concentrated

Almost everyone measures an oil in drops, and on a gentle oil that is fine. On this one it is not, for two separate reasons.

The first is that a drop is not a fixed quantity. A dropper delivers roughly twenty drops to the millilitre, but published figures across brands range from twenty to forty, and the size of a drop varies with the thickness of the oil, the shape of the pipette and how you hold it. The sources that explain this are unusually blunt about it: drops are a rough estimate and are not consistent between one dropper and another.

The second is what that imprecision amounts to at this concentration. At 333mg a millilitre, a drop is somewhere around seventeen milligrams if your dropper gives twenty to the millilitre, and around eight if it gives forty. That is a twofold uncertainty on every single drop, and on an oil this strong the absolute size of that uncertainty is large.

So the practical guidance, which is about measurement rather than about how much anyone should take: use the millilitre markings on the pipette rather than counting drops. Most droppers of this kind are marked at 0.25, 0.5 and 1 millilitre. Those marks are the only reliable thing on the pipette, and on a 333mg-per-millilitre oil they matter considerably more than they would on a 50mg one.

It is also worth knowing that a full pipette of this oil, drawn to the 1ml mark, is 333mg. That is not a serving suggestion, it is arithmetic, and it is the kind of arithmetic worth doing before rather than after.

What the Food Standards Agency actually advises, and how it sits against this bottle

The Food Standards Agency advises that healthy adults keep their CBD intake from food supplements to no more than 10mg per day. That advice was announced on 12 October 2023, revised down from a considerably higher earlier figure after the agency adopted advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. It is precautionary consumer advice rather than a legal limit.

It is worth saying plainly that an oil is the format that advice was written for. Elsewhere on this site we have had to point out that the same figure gets quoted on vapes, which are not food and sit outside the regime entirely. Here there is no such mismatch. This is an ingestible CBD supplement, so the FSA's figure is squarely about products like this one.

Set the two together and the scale becomes clear. At 333mg a millilitre, 10mg is around three hundredths of a millilitre, which is less than a single drop from a standard dropper. The bottle as a whole holds 10,000mg, which against a 10mg-a-day figure is on the order of a thousand days.

We are reporting the advice and doing the arithmetic, and we are not telling you what to take. We give no recommended amount on any product page and we are not going to start here. What we will say is that a bottle of this concentration is not a product to approach casually, and that anyone who has been using a 50mg-a-millilitre oil and switches to this one without recalculating is changing what they take by a factor of about six.

Which cannabinoids are in it, and why CBN matters more than people realise

Euphoria names the profile rather than leaving full spectrum as a vague label, which is more than most makers do. The cannabinoids listed are CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBGA, CBN and CBC, and the description states that the natural profile includes THC.

That is a genuinely informative disclosure and it deserves a careful reading, because one of those names matters in a way that is widely misunderstood.

The UK consumer test is a maximum of 1mg of controlled cannabinoids in the container. Almost everybody who quotes that rule reads it as a rule about THC. It is not. The controlled cannabinoids counted are THC, THCV and CBN, and the 1mg is the total across all three, not each.

So a full spectrum oil that names CBN in its published profile is naming one of the three compounds the limit actually counts. That is not an allegation about this bottle and we are making none: the maker is being more transparent than most by publishing the profile at all, and nothing here says the product is outside the limit.

What it does mean is that the paperwork matters more on this product than on almost anything else we sell. The limit is an absolute quantity in the container rather than a proportion, so it does not scale with bottle size, and the profile advertises the presence of a counted compound.

Our position follows the one we take on every full spectrum line, and it is stricter here rather than looser. We publish no figure for THC, THCV or CBN on this product, in either direction, and we will not until we hold a per-batch certificate of analysis for it. We are not going to convert any percentage anyone else publishes into a reassuring milligram number. What MCT does, and how to store it

The carrier is medium chain triglyceride oil derived from vegetable oils, which is the standard choice for a CBD tincture and worth understanding rather than skipping over.

Cannabinoids are fat soluble, so they need a fat to dissolve into. MCT is chosen because it is liquid at room temperature, close to neutral in flavour, thin enough to move through a dropper cleanly, and stable. Heavier oils such as olive or hemp seed are used by some makers and bring their own flavour, which at 33 per cent extract would be competing with plenty of hemp character already.

On taste, be realistic. A full spectrum extract at this concentration is not a neutral product. It is earthy, bitter and distinctly herbal, and the higher the concentration the more of that comes through. Anybody moving up from a gentle flavoured oil should expect a considerable step in taste as well as in strength.

Storage is straightforward and worth doing properly. Keep it upright, cool, and out of direct light, with the cap closed. Light and heat degrade cannabinoids over time, which is why these oils come in dark glass rather than clear. Do not refrigerate it: MCT thickens when cold and a thick oil moves badly through a pipette, which makes accurate measurement harder on exactly the product where accuracy matters most.

Who should not buy this

If you are new to CBD, this is emphatically the wrong bottle. At 333mg a millilitre it is the most concentrated oil we stock, and there is no gentle way into it. The 50mg-a-millilitre options in the table above exist precisely for working out what suits you.

If you have been using a lower-strength oil, do not carry your usual measurement across. Recalculate. Moving from a 50mg oil to this one without changing how much you use is a sixfold change.

If you want a THC-free product, full spectrum is by definition the grade that retains the wider profile, and the maker states that profile includes THC. The broad spectrum and isolate options in the table are built differently.
