It is not a tincture, and the pack does not say it is

A tincture has a proper definition and it is not a loose one. It is an alcoholic or hydroalcoholic extract of plant material, conventionally somewhere between 15 and 80 per cent alcohol, which is a large part of why a tincture keeps without preservatives. Alcohol is the traditional solvent because it pulls out resins and alkaloids that water leaves behind.

MCT is not alcohol. Neither are olive, coconut or avocado oil. Those are carrier oils, and something infused into one of them is properly an infused oil. That is what this product is.

So the name CBD MCT Tincture Oil manages a contradiction in three words. It names an alcohol-extract preparation, then a carrier oil, then an oil. The CBD trade has adopted tincture as a general word for anything sold with a pipette in the cap, and the term has drifted a long way from what it means everywhere else.

The part we find genuinely telling is that the manufacturer's own packaging does not use the word at all. The bottle and carton read CBD Oil, 3000mg, expertly blended full spectrum CBD oil, 30ml, natural flavour. Tincture appears only in the product title, which suggests the pack designer and the person writing listings were working to different vocabularies.

Why any of this matters practically: if you were specifically after an alcohol-based tincture, this is not one. Some people want that for the faster onset an alcohol carrier can give, some for the distinctly different taste, and some are actively avoiding alcohol in a daily product. All three groups deserve to know which of the two they are buying, and the name does not tell them.

What 14 drops a day works out at

The manufacturer publishes guidance of up to 14 drops per day. That is more than most makers publish, and it is worth converting, because a drop count means nothing until you know the concentration behind it.

This oil is 3000mg in 30ml, which is 100mg in each millilitre. A dropper delivers roughly twenty drops to the millilitre, so a drop here is in the region of 5mg. Fourteen of them comes to somewhere around 70mg.

Now set that beside the current public health position. The Food Standards Agency advises that healthy adults keep their CBD intake from food supplements to no more than 10mg a day. That figure was announced on 12 October 2023, after the agency adopted advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.

The two numbers are seven times apart. And the interesting detail is what 70mg used to be: it is very close to the figure the FSA advised before the 2023 revision. We have already found a vape retailer elsewhere in our range still quoting the older 70mg number, and the same superseded figure appears to be sitting behind this guidance too.

We are setting two published figures side by side and nothing more. We are not saying the manufacturer's guidance is unsafe, we are not telling you what to take, and we give no dosage recommendation on any product page. What we will say is that if you were treating a maker's suggested maximum as the sensible ceiling, it is worth knowing that the relevant public health advice is a considerably smaller number and has been since 2023.

It applies here too, though with a third of the concentration the consequences of imprecision are correspondingly smaller.

Why you hold it under your tongue

The maker specifies placing the oil under the tongue and holding it for 20 to 30 seconds before swallowing. That instruction appears on a great many CBD oils and is almost never explained, so here is what it is doing.

The tissue under the tongue is thin and richly supplied with blood vessels sitting close to the surface. Substances held there can pass into the bloodstream directly through that tissue rather than travelling down to the stomach first. That route is called sublingual absorption and it is the reason CBD oils come with a dropper rather than in a capsule.

The alternative route matters because of what happens on the way. Anything swallowed goes to the stomach, then through the liver before it reaches general circulation, and the liver metabolises a proportion of what passes through it. Holding the oil under the tongue lets some of it bypass that first pass entirely.

That is why the timing is specified rather than being a flourish. Swallow immediately and you have taken it as a food. Hold it and part of it takes the shorter route. Twenty to thirty seconds is the manufacturer's figure and a fairly standard one across the category.

One practical consequence worth knowing: this is an unflavoured full spectrum oil, and full spectrum extracts are noticeably earthy and bitter. Holding one in your mouth for half a minute is a different experience from swallowing it quickly, and it is the main reason flavoured versions of these oils exist at all. If you have tried an oil before and disliked the taste, an unflavoured one held sublingually is the least forgiving version of it.

Where the hemp comes from and how it is extracted

Two provenance details that most oil listings omit entirely, and which Professor Herb does publish.

The CBD is stated as coming from certified farms in the United States. That is a more specific claim than most of our range manages: many products in this category say nothing at all about origin, and several say only that the hemp is European. We report it as the manufacturer's statement rather than something we have independently verified, which is the same treatment we give every sourcing claim.

The extraction is described as non-solvent and non-chemical. That phrasing rules out the hydrocarbon and alcohol methods, and it is the sort of description usually used for CO2 extraction or a mechanical process. What it does not do is name the method, so we cannot tell you exactly which one is meant.

It is worth knowing why extraction method comes up so often in this category. Where a chemical solvent is used, how thoroughly it is removed afterwards becomes the standing quality question, which is why so many makers advertise their way around it. A non-solvent claim sidesteps that concern, though as we have noted elsewhere in our range, no solvent is not the same thing as a guarantee of purity: it addresses one specific worry rather than all of them.

Full spectrum here, and what we will not tell you

Our own record for this oil has it as full spectrum, and the maker's line is that it contains only trace amounts of THC to guarantee a full spectrum experience while remaining compliant with UK trading law.

We report that sentence as the manufacturer's, and we are deliberately not adopting it. Compliance statements from a maker are a claim rather than a certificate, and repeating a compliance assurance as though it were our own finding is exactly the practice we avoid across the site.

Our position on every full spectrum line is the same. Full spectrum is by definition the grade that retains the plant's wider cannabinoid profile rather than stripping it out, which is precisely why per-batch paperwork matters more here than on an isolate. We publish no THC figure for a full spectrum product in either direction until we hold a certificate of analysis for the batch in question.

For completeness, the UK consumer test is an absolute quantity, no more than 1mg of controlled cannabinoids in the container, and the compounds counted are THC, THCV and CBN together rather than THC alone. The strength you can get, and the two you cannot

Professor Herb makes this oil in three strengths, all in the same 30ml bottle: 500mg, 1500mg and 3000mg. Those work out at roughly 17, 50 and 100mg in each millilitre.

We stock the 3000mg only. If you wanted one of the gentler two, we cannot supply it and you would need to look elsewhere, which we would rather say plainly than leave you to work out.

Within our own range, 100mg a millilitre is a middling concentration rather than a high one. Our gentlest oils sit at 50mg and the strongest, the Euphoria full spectrum, is 333mg. This one sits between them, which makes it a more reasonable place to be than either extreme if you are moving up from something mild.

The comparison below is by concentration rather than by bottle total, for the reason set out at length on the Euphoria page: a headline milligram figure describes how much you were sold, and only the per-millilitre figure describes what you actually take.

Who should not buy this

If you specifically wanted an alcohol-based tincture, this is not one whatever the title says. It is CBD infused into MCT oil.

If you dislike the taste of hemp, an unflavoured full spectrum oil held under the tongue for half a minute is the most demanding version of it. Flavoured oils exist precisely for this and there is no shame in choosing one.

If you are new to CBD, 100mg a millilitre is a middling strength rather than a gentle one, and the 50mg options in the table are a more forgiving place to begin.

If you were planning to follow the maker's 14-drop guidance as a target, read that section again. It works out at roughly seven times the figure the FSA currently advises, and we would rather you knew that than not.
