What H4CBD is, and what it is not

H4CBD is made by taking cannabidiol and adding hydrogen to it, a process called hydrogenation. The result is a different molecule from the one it started as. That makes it semi-synthetic: derived from a plant compound, but not something the plant produces.

It is therefore not CBD, and a product containing H4CBD is not a CBD product however it is shelved or described. It holds no Novel Foods authorisation. It is not approved, validated or signed off by any UK regulator, and nobody selling it, ourselves included, is in a position to tell you otherwise.

The trade sells H4CBD on the basis that it produces a more pronounced effect than CBD. We are not going to repeat that claim or supply our own version of it, partly because effects claims are not something a shop may make, and partly because that specific claim is what brings the whole category within reach of legislation covering substances sold for their effect.

Nobody will tell you what is in the stick

This is the part that genuinely surprised us. These are sticks you are expected to light and inhale, and not one page selling them says what they are filled with.

One retailer describes them only as pre-rolled with an aroma. Another publishes no information about the filling at all. A third listing, now a dead link, referred to a joint core, which is the closest anyone comes to describing the contents. No page names the material, the paper, or whether there is a filter or tip.

For most products an unpublished specification is an inconvenience. Here it is more than that, because what the stick contains decides which legal question applies to it. That is covered in the next section, and it cannot be answered from any published source.

What is published and consistent across retailers is the cannabinoid loading: 100mg of H4CBD per stick, with the tube holding three of them. Those figures agree everywhere we looked.

Two separate legal questions, not one

Every page selling this product answers the legal question with two words: THC free. That is true and it is not the issue, because neither of the two questions this product actually raises is about THC.

The first concerns H4CBD itself. It is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid sold on the strength of the effect it produces, and legislation covering substances supplied for their psychoactive effect is written broadly enough to be a live question here. That is not a settled matter and we are not going to tell you it is settled in either direction.

The second is specific to this format and does not arise for gummies, oils or vapes. The UK industrial hemp licence covers the stalk and the seed of the plant. Hemp flower and smokable hemp biomass sit outside what that licence permits. So if these sticks are filled with hemp flower, that is a separate question from the H4CBD applied to it, and because no seller publishes the filling, it is a question nobody can currently answer.

Novel Foods, the regime people usually reach for, is not the operative one here. It governs ingestible CBD such as oils, gummies and drinks. A product you burn is not a food. So the absence of Novel Foods authorisation is true and worth stating, but it is not what makes this product complicated.

This line is on our shelves because the owner reviewed exactly this reasoning and decided to stock it. That is a commercial decision we have carried out, and the honest thing is to publish the reasoning alongside the product rather than quietly leaving it off the page.

Four aromas, and what the strain names mean

There are four to choose from and all are currently available. Every listing describes them as aromas, and that word is doing real work.

OG Kush is a cannabis strain name. What is in the stick is a flavouring intended to smell and taste like it, not an extract of that strain. The same applies to the fruit options, which are flavourings rather than fruit. Nobody in the ranking set explains this, and the strain naming convention across the H4CBD trade invites exactly the wrong assumption.

On character, OG Kush is the only earthy, herbal option of the four. Blueberry and Strawberry are the sweeter pair, Blueberry the deeper of them. Pineapple is the sharpest and the most tropical.

Where this sits on the Euphoria shelf, and what is genuinely CBD

Euphoria is one of the larger brands we carry and its hemp and hash shelf mixes two quite different things, which is worth untangling before you choose.

The great majority of Euphoria's hash and solid extracts are genuine CBD products, sold with a published CBD percentage: the Afghan, Moroccan, Amnesia, Critical, Kush, Gorilla Glue, Jamaican Dream and Gelato hashes among others. Those are cannabidiol, not a semi-synthetic derivative, and they raise none of the H4CBD questions set out above.

Only three lines on that shelf are H4CBD: these pre-rolls and two solid hashes. If you came looking for CBD and landed here because the shelf puts them side by side, the CBD hashes are what you actually want.

Who should not buy this

If you are looking for CBD, this is not a CBD product and no amount of shelf placement makes it one. Euphoria's CBD hashes are on the same aisle and are what you want instead.

If you want a settled regulatory position, this product does not have one, and neither we nor anyone else selling it can give you one. That is a reason to think about it rather than a reason to panic, but you should decide with the information rather than without it.

If you do not already smoke, a product designed to be burned and inhaled is a poor place to start with cannabinoids of any kind. Every other format we sell, from oils to pods to gummies, exists without requiring combustion.

And if you were hoping for something an authority has signed off, nothing in the H4CBD category has been. It is not authorised, not validated and not approved, and any listing telling you otherwise is telling you something it cannot support.
