Ten milligrams a lolly, and what that number is next to

In October 2023 the Food Standards Agency revised its precautionary advice for healthy adults down to no more than ten milligrams of CBD a day from food supplements, adopting the position taken by the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. It is advice rather than a legal ceiling, and the FSA has said it will not force the change on products already sitting on its public list. It is still the clearest reference point a UK buyer has.

One of these lollies is ten milligrams. So a single lolly sits exactly at that advisory figure, and the gift box holds five of them.

We are not telling you how much to take, and nothing on this page is dosage guidance. We are telling you where the published numbers land, because the entire market states the ten milligram figure as a selling point and none of it states what the figure is being measured against. A shopper who works through a box in one sitting has taken five times the advisory amount without a single page in the ranking set having mentioned that the advisory exists.

Two things are missing across the whole market, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

The first is net weight, where the published figures contradict each other. One European retailer puts the five-lolly gift box at ninety grams. A wholesaler's own product title for the same box says one hundred grams. Both cannot be right, and neither explains itself, so we are not going to pick one for you. We have asked our supplier to confirm it.

The second is allergens. Nobody declares them, including the manufacturer. The ingredient list as published contains no obvious major allergen, but an absent declaration is not the same as a clean one, and on confectionery that distinction matters. One more thing worth noting, because it says something about how this product is sold in the UK. Of the pages we examined selling this exact gift box, only one stated an age restriction at all. It is an eighteen plus product, and it should be described as one everywhere.

What eating one is actually like

It is a lolly, and it behaves like one. The shell is a firm boiled sugar that takes a good while to work down, and the flavour is loud in the first minute and then settles. The sour two, Apple and Raspberry, land with an actual acidic bite up front rather than the vague tartness a lot of confectionery calls sour.

Then the centre arrives. The gum core is the reason this line exists and it changes the whole thing part way through: you go from a hard sweet to a conventional bubblegum, with a bit of the shell's flavour still on it. It is a genuinely fun piece of design and it is also the reason a lolly cannot be put down and picked up later.

The CBD is almost undetectable in the taste. At ten milligrams inside a sugar shell that size, the herbal note you get from an oil or a stronger gummy is not really present. If you have avoided CBD sweets because you disliked the taste of hemp coming through, this format is about as far from that as the category gets.

Cotton Candy is the sweetest and the most childlike, which is worth saying plainly on an eighteen plus product. Passion Fruit is the one adults tend to reach for twice.

CBD is sold in the UK as a food supplement. A seller may not attach health or therapeutic outcomes to one, and a claim about how a product will make you feel is exactly the kind of statement that is not permitted. Plenty of pages in this category carry that language anyway. We would rather describe the sweet accurately and leave the effect claims to people who have not read the rules.

The same applies to timing. Three separate pages ranking for CBD lollipops publish three different onset figures, one saying around fifteen minutes, one saying fifteen to forty five, and one saying roughly an hour. None of them sources it. Rather than pick whichever suits us, we publish none of them.

On the law, the position here is more involved than it looks, because this product contains a real CBD extract. Ingestible CBD in Britain falls under the Novel Foods regime, which means a product needs FSA authorisation and validated products appear on the agency's public list. We have not verified a listing for this line and so we make no such claim for it, which is more than any page in the ranking set says on the subject.

The consumer test on controlled cannabinoids is one milligram per container. Per container, whatever the container's size, not per lolly and not as a percentage of anything. The percentage figure that circulates in this corner of the internet, including on two sites belonging to brands we ourselves stock, governs how much of those cannabinoids a licensed grower may have in a standing hemp crop. It is a farming rule and it has never been the test applied to a finished sweet.

The brand and its stockists also describe these as one hundred per cent legal in the European Union. That is a statement about the EU. Britain has not been in it since 2020, and the two regimes are not interchangeable. Everything on our shelves is eighteen plus.

Who should skip this box

Anyone who wants a small amount of CBD. Ten milligrams in one sweet is the whole of the FSA's daily advisory in a single sitting, and a lolly cannot be halved once it is unwrapped. If you want to start lower, a format you can portion is a better starting point than this one.

Anyone who needs an allergen declaration. Nobody in this supply chain publishes one, ourselves included until the supplier sends it, and we are not going to reason our way to a reassurance we cannot support.
