A closed system, sold next to an open one

Iguana makes two batteries and they represent opposite bets about how vaping hardware should work.

This one is a closed pod system. It accepts I-Puff pods in half-millilitre and one-millilitre sizes, and there is no thread, no adapter and no statement anywhere from the brand suggesting another maker's pod will fit. When you buy an I-Puff battery you are buying into I-Puff pods.

The other is the 510 cartridge pen, and 510 is an open threaded standard that runs cartridges from almost any brand. We have explained how that works on its own listing rather than repeating it here.

Neither approach is wrong, and the honest trade is worth setting out because nobody selling pod kits does.

A closed system is easier to live with. The pod clicks in, the battery is tuned to that pod, nothing needs configuring and nothing is incompatible. There is no wrong setting to choose because there are no settings.

What you give up is independence. The hardware is only as useful as the refill range behind it. If a maker discontinues a flavour you will not get it elsewhere, and if it stops making pods altogether the battery becomes a paperweight. An open 510 pen has no such exposure, because the standard outlives any particular company.

So the question to ask yourself is not which is better but how long you expect to be using it and how much you mind being tied to one supplier.

This is a replacement part, not a starting point

The name says replacement and it means it. This listing is the battery on its own, with no pod in the box.

Bought by itself it does nothing at all, because there is nothing in it to vape. It exists for the person who already has the I-Puff system, whose original battery has stopped holding charge, and who wants to carry on using the pods they already buy.

If you are new to this and looking for a CBD vape, the starter pack is the purchase you want. That comes as the battery together with a prefilled one-millilitre pod, so it works out of the box.

If you already have a working battery and just need more to vape, the replacement pod is the one.

We are labouring this because the search results for this product do not distinguish between the three, and a page that sells you a battery when you wanted a vape has not done its job.

No button, no settings, and why that is by design

The specification is short: a 280mAh cell, USB-C charging, a medical-grade stainless steel central post, a twin-entry air system with an anti-obstruction design, and a small window so you can see the level in the pod. It measures roughly 109mm by 23mm by 11mm with a matte finish.

It is draw-activated, which means there is no button at all. You inhale and it fires. There is nothing to turn on, no click sequence, no voltage to set and no preheat.

Set that against the 510 pen, which has an adjustable voltage range, a preheat function and a three-way button, and the obvious reading is that this is the plainer, simpler device. That reading is wrong, and the real explanation is more interesting.

A 510 battery has to cope with cartridges it knows nothing about. Different makers use different coil resistances and different oil thicknesses, so the battery has to hand you the controls because only you know what is screwed onto it. That is why it needs a voltage range and a preheat for thick distillate.

A closed system has no such problem. The maker knows exactly which pod goes on this battery, so the output can be fixed to suit it at the factory. The absence of controls is a consequence of the architecture rather than a corner cut.

The twin air intake and the anti-obstruction design are aimed at the same thing from the other end: keeping a thick distillate moving through the pod without clogging, which is the failure mode of every pod system.

What goes in it, and one thing worth asking about

The pods this battery takes are described by the brand as a millilitre holding seven hundred milligrams of seventy per cent full-spectrum CBD distillate, with natural terpenes, and stated as free of THC and nicotine.

The battery itself contains no CBD, so nothing about this particular item raises a cannabinoid question. But if you are buying it you are committed to those pods, so it is worth knowing what the system involves.

Full spectrum is the grade that deliberately keeps the plant's other cannabinoids rather than stripping them out. The UK test for a finished consumer product counts controlled cannabinoids in the container, measured in milligrams, and we have asked our supplier for the per-batch certificate of analysis for these pods. Until that is in hand we are not going to put a figure of our own on this page, and nobody else selling them has published one either.

There is also a wording point worth raising rather than glossing. The brand describes the pods as seventy per cent full spectrum and as THC-free in the same breath. Full spectrum ordinarily means the THC is retained rather than removed, so those two statements sit awkwardly together. We are reporting the wording rather than resolving it, and it has gone to the supplier alongside the certificate request.

One smaller thing to note for completeness. Our own product record lists a cannabinoid type for this battery, which is nonsense on a piece of electronics. It is the fourth time we have caught that field being wrong and it is now being looked at across the whole catalogue rather than product by product, as set out on the 510 pen listing.

Who should skip this listing

Anyone who does not already own the I-Puff system. There is no pod in the box, so on its own this does nothing. The starter pack is the purchase you want.

Anyone who wants to use cartridges from other brands. This battery will not take them, by design. The 510 pen will.

Anyone who wants control over how the device fires. There is no voltage adjustment and no preheat, and that is deliberate rather than an omission.

Anyone who wants the full-spectrum question settled before they commit. The pods are full spectrum, we have asked for the certificate, and it is entirely reasonable to wait for it.

And anyone buying hardware to last. A closed system is a bet on one company continuing to make refills. That is a perfectly sensible bet to take with your eyes open, and a poor one to take by accident.
