Vitality CBD Muscle Balm, 50ml jar

There are two Vitality balms, and they are different recipes

Vitality has sold a 50ml balm and a 100ml balm. The natural assumption is that one is simply a larger jar of the other. Checked against the brand's own published ingredients, that is not the case.

The 50ml was sold as the Active Muscle Rub at 300mg, and its published botanicals are organic argan oil, eucalyptus and lavender.

The 100ml is the CBD Muscle Balm at 500mg, and its full list runs MCT from coconut, organic beeswax, hemp extract, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, then linalool, limonene and geraniol as the declared fragrance components.

Argan oil appears in the first and nowhere in the second. Beeswax appears in the second and is not named in the first. Those are two formulations that happen to share a scent, not one product in two sizes.

The 100ml is the only muscle balm on Vitality's own site today. The 50ml continues to circulate through distribution, which is a large part of how the two came to be conflated.

One listing contradicting itself three times

It would be easy to present the above as a subtle distinction that only a pedant would raise. Here is why it is not.

A retailer ranking for this exact search term has a page whose web address ends in fifty millilitres and three hundred milligrams. The heading at the top of that same page reads one hundred millilitres and five hundred milligrams. And the product reference printed further down that same page ends in three hundred milligrams again.

Three identifiers, two products, one page, and no way to tell from it which jar would arrive.

That is not us inferring a mistake from circumstantial detail. It is a single listing disagreeing with itself twice over, and it is the clearest illustration available of why the milligram figure attached to a Vitality balm online cannot be taken at face value.

This is also the third Vitality product in a row where we have found a specification belonging to one item attached to another. Our lemon oral drops carry a broad spectrum description that appears to belong to the vape line, and our lemon oral spray carries a per-spray figure that arithmetically belongs to the smaller bottle. At three, it stops being coincidence and starts being a characteristic of how this brand's data travels through retail.

The smaller jar is the stronger one per millilitre

Set the confusion aside for a moment, take the two published figures as given, and divide them.

Three hundred milligrams spread through fifty millilitres is six milligrams in every millilitre. Five hundred milligrams spread through one hundred millilitres is five. The 50ml jar is the more concentrated of the two by about a fifth, despite carrying the smaller number on the front.

The brand markets the 100ml on the line that it is twice the size with twice the coverage. The first half is exactly right and the second is the useful bit: what you get from the bigger jar is more applications, not a stronger one.

This is the arithmetic worth doing on any topical. A milligram total tells you what is in the jar. A milligram per millilitre tells you what is in the fingertip you actually use, and only one of those two numbers is printed on the front of the packaging.

Which of the two are we shipping, and why we will not guess

Our distributor supplies this line under the name Muscle Balm at 50ml, which pairs the 100ml product's name with the 50ml product's size, and supplies no milligram figure at all.

Given everything above, we are not going to print a strength for it. Choosing one would mean picking between two candidates on the basis of a naming convention that has already been shown to be unreliable across this entire product line.

So the honest version is this. It is a Vitality 50ml jar of CBD balm scented with eucalyptus and lavender, made from isolate CBD, and the milligram figure is stated on the jar itself rather than confidently by us. We would rather tell you to read the label than tell you a number we cannot stand behind.

We have raised the ambiguity with the distributor. If a confirmed figure comes back, it will appear here.

One thing worth reporting accurately while we are on the subject of claims: Vitality states that its Active CBD Muscle Rub was picked as the best muscle balm by The Independent's IndyBest in February 2021, from a field of twenty. That is the brand's own account of a dated press mention rather than anything we have verified, and it attaches to the Active Rub specifically, which is the identity in question here.

How it compares with the other balms on our shelf

This is the comparison a brand site structurally cannot publish, and it does not flatter this jar.

Orange County's balms run at twenty milligrams in every millilitre in both jar sizes, which is more than three times either Vitality figure. If concentration is what you are shopping on, Vitality is not the answer on our shelf.

What Vitality has instead is a much simpler ingredient list. The 100ml formula is seven lines long and reads like a kitchen: coconut-derived oil, beeswax, hemp extract, two essential oils and their declared fragrance components. Balms elsewhere in this category carry emulsifiers, preservatives and synthetic fragrance because they are creams rather than waxes, and a wax needs less holding together.

So the choice between them is less about which is better and more about which trade you want: a short, wax-based ingredient list at a modest concentration, or a much more concentrated balm with a longer formula behind it.

What it is like to use, and who should skip it

A wax balm behaves differently from a cream. It sits firm in the jar, needs a moment of finger pressure to lift, and softens as it meets skin warmth rather than spreading straight away. That first few seconds of working it between the fingers is the whole difference in feel.

The scent leads with eucalyptus, which is sharp and slightly medicinal in the way a chest rub is, with lavender underneath rounding it off. It is a carrying smell. Anyone nearby will know you have used it, and it lingers on the hands.

Now the cautions, which the rest of this SERP does not bother with.

Skip it if you want the most concentrated balm available, because as the table above shows this is not it.

Skip it if you avoid beeswax. The 100ml formula is built on it and is therefore not vegan, and since we cannot confirm which formulation this jar carries, anyone avoiding animal-derived ingredients should read the jar before opening it.

Skip it if strong eucalyptus is unwelcome, whether in a shared office, a shared bed, or on hands that are about to handle food.
