A dry tablet, and what that means for a fat-soluble compound

The full ingredient list is CBD isolate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide and di-calcium phosphate.

The interesting part of that list is what is not on it. There is no oil of any kind. Every ingredient after the CBD is a dry tabletting excipient, which is to say a bulking agent, a lubricant, a flow agent and a compression aid. None of them is a carrier.

That matters because of what CBD is. It is lipophilic, meaning it dissolves readily in fats and oils and hardly at all in water. Oil-filled capsules exist in this category precisely because suspending CBD in a fat is the normal way a swallowed format handles that property. This product takes the other approach and compresses the isolate powder directly.

The brand does not hide any of this, and the honest thing is to quote it. Hempthy's own instruction is to take one tablet with water, preferably alongside a meal to enhance absorption. That is good advice, it is the same advice you would give for any fat-soluble supplement, and it quietly tells you the tablet is not carrying out that part of the job on its own.

We are describing what is in the tablet and repeating what the maker says to do with it. We are not going to tell you how much of the fifty milligrams ends up anywhere, because nobody has published a figure for this product and we do not invent them.

The reason this is worth a section rather than a footnote is that almost every CBD product in the UK is compared by the number on the front of the box. The number and the format are two different questions, and only one of them is printed there. If you are choosing between a fifty milligram tablet and a twenty five milligram oil capsule, you are not simply choosing between fifty and twenty five.

What the four excipients actually are

Nobody selling this tablet explains its ingredient list, which is a shame, because it reads more pharmaceutical than it is and every item on it has a dull and specific job.

Microcrystalline cellulose is purified plant cellulose. It is a bulking agent, and it is there because fifty milligrams of powder is far too little to press into something you could pick up and swallow.

Magnesium stearate is a lubricant. It stops the powder sticking to the machinery that presses the tablets. It appears in a very large proportion of tablets of any kind for that reason.

Silicon dioxide is a glidant and anti-caking agent, keeping the powder flowing evenly so each tablet gets the same amount in it.

Di-calcium phosphate is a compression aid. It gives the mixture something to bind around so the tablet holds together and then breaks up again when you swallow it.

None of them is a colour, a sweetener, a preservative or an allergen. After the imperial mints, this is the shortest and least eventful ingredient list of anything Hempthy makes, and unlike the mints there is not even any sugar in it.

Fifty milligrams in one tablet

This is the strongest single unit anywhere in the Hempthy range. The sweets top out at thirty milligrams a piece and most of them sit at ten or twenty.

The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to take no more than ten milligrams of CBD a day from food supplements. One tablet is five times that figure, and unlike a sweet there is no smaller portion of a tablet to take.

Nothing on this page is dosage guidance and the decision is entirely yours. Why a tablet rather than a capsule

There are two real advantages and they are worth stating plainly.

The first is dietary. Softgel capsules are conventionally made from gelatine unless a manufacturer has specifically used a vegan shell, and a compressed tablet has no shell at all. That is why this product is described as vegan and gluten free, with the seller adding kosher and halal, which is the seller's wording rather than a certification we can point to. The second is that it is unflavoured and unsweetened. There is nothing to like or dislike about the taste, no sugar, no maltitol, no colours and no acid coating. For anyone who has worked through the ingredient lists on the sweets and found something in each of them they would rather avoid, a tablet removes the entire question.

Anyone new to CBD. Fifty milligrams in a single unit, with no way to take part of one, is not a starting point. The three hundred milligram sweets at ten milligrams a piece are.

Anyone who wants to adjust the amount they take. A tablet gives you one option and multiples of it. An oil measured by dropper is the format that allows anything finer.

Anyone who dislikes swallowing tablets. This is a compressed tablet rather than a small softgel, and there is no chewable version.

Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication. The FSA advises vulnerable groups not to consume CBD, which applies across this whole shelf rather than only where a pack prints it.

And anyone choosing purely on the milligram figure. Fifteen hundred is the largest number on this brand's shelf and it is a real number, but it describes what is in the pack rather than how the format behaves, and this page exists mostly to make that distinction.
