Mr Tipp's Pre-Rolled Hemp Blunt Tubes, 12mm Glass Tip

A blunt is normally a tobacco wrap. This one is not.

The best-ranked UK page selling blunt wraps defines a blunt as a way of smoking a cigar, made of two layers, the inner leaf being tobacco pulp or leaves.

That definition is correct, and it is exactly the thing this product replaces.

A traditional blunt is a cigar that has been split open, emptied and refilled, so the wrap around it is cured tobacco leaf or a reconstituted tobacco sheet. Anyone smoking one is smoking tobacco whether they intended to or not, along with the nicotine that comes with it.

A hemp blunt wrap swaps that leaf for a pressed sheet of hemp fibre. Same size, same shape, same slow burn, none of the tobacco. Both the brand and our distributor state plainly that these tubes contain no tobacco and no nicotine.

Where this product goes one step further is that the hemp sheet has already been rolled into a tube for you. A blunt wrap is a flat sheet and still needs rolling. A blunt tube arrives as a finished cylinder with a tip already fitted, open at one end and waiting to be filled.

That distinction gets lost constantly, because retailers file wraps, cones and tubes under one heading and describe none of them.

What the 12mm is actually measuring

The 12mm in the product name is the diameter of the glass tip, and by extension the bore you are drawing through.

Mr Tipp's makes its tips in four widths: 8mm, 9mm, 10mm and 12mm. That range is the useful context nobody publishes alongside the product. On its own, 12mm is a number. Set against the other three, it is the widest the brand makes, and the one reserved for blunt-sized formats rather than joints.

As a rough guide, 8mm and 9mm are joint territory, 10mm suits a wide joint or a small cone, and 12mm is what a blunt takes.

The practical effect is a wider column of air. A wide bore draws with less resistance than a narrow one, which is why blunt smokers tend to find a joint-sized tip tight and joint smokers find a blunt tip loose.

On length, the brand's own bulk listings for its glass-tipped hemp blunt tubes give figures of 100mm and 105mm, with a stated capacity of around two grams on those lines, and one of its other formats is described as taking up to 2.5 grams. Our distributor does not publish a length or a capacity for this particular pack, so read those brand figures as the range the format sits in rather than as a specification for what is on this page.

Glass instead of a folded card crutch

Most people who roll have never used anything but a crutch: a strip of card rolled or concertinaed into a spiral and pushed into the end. It works, it is disposable, and it goes soft.

Glass behaves differently in four ways that are easy to verify and worth knowing.

It does not absorb. Paper draws moisture in from your mouth and takes flavour compounds with it, which is why a card crutch tastes of card by the end. Glass takes on neither.

It does not soften. A wet crutch collapses and the draw closes up. Glass holds its bore from the first pull to the last.

And it can be washed and reused. Warm water or a soak in isopropyl alcohol, and the same tip goes into the next tube. A card crutch is used once.

One correction, because the word filter does a lot of unearned work in this category. A glass tip is not a filter in the cigarette sense. It has no filtration medium in it, it removes nothing from what passes through, and it should not be described as making anything cleaner. What it does is hold the end of the tube open, keep loose material out of your mouth, and put a rigid mouthpiece between you and the burning end. Two sources, two different answers on flavour

Our distributor lists this product with a neutral flavour and no tobacco or nicotine, which reads as plain hemp and nothing added.

The brand's own American distributor describes its glass-tipped hemp blunt line as infused with a rich, toasted sweet cream note.

Those two statements cannot both describe the same tube. The likeliest explanations are that the flavoured line and the plain line are different products sharing a family name, or that the ranges sold into the two markets differ. We have asked our distributor to confirm which applies here.

There is no CBD in this, and our own listing says otherwise

Hemp turns up in two entirely separate roles in this catalogue, and this product is the one people most often misread.

Hemp fibre is the stalk of the plant, processed into paper, board, textile and, here, a wrap. Hemp extract is what comes out of the flower. A hemp wrap is made from the first and contains none of the second.

We checked three sources on this: the brand, our UK distributor and the brand's US distributor. Not one of them claims any cannabinoid content, and the brand markets the range on being free of tobacco and nicotine rather than on containing anything.

So here is our own mistake, in the open. Our catalogue currently records this row as a CBD isolate product, and the automatically generated line beneath the title calls it a CBD product from Mr Tipp's. That is wrong. It is a generation fault in our importer, it is the third of its kind this project has caught, and it is being corrected rather than quietly left in place.

What follows from there is straightforward. The Novel Foods regime covers ingestible CBD, so it does not apply to a wrap you do not eat. The UK consumer test of one milligram of controlled cannabinoids per container has nothing to bite on in a product with no cannabinoid in it. Where it sits against the rest of the aisle

The choice in this aisle is really a choice about how much work you want to do and what shape you want at the end of it.

A tube is the least work of the lot, with one trade-off worth naming. Because the sides are parallel rather than tapered, material has to go in evenly all the way along.
