Look up this product at Multitrance and you will not find it. There is no Cannabis Coffee cappuccino in its range.

What there is, is Hemp Coffee Instant Cappuccino, in Classic and Caramel, ten sachets to a box. That is this product. The name on our listing comes through our distributor's feed rather than from the manufacturer, and somewhere in that chain hemp became cannabis.

It is worth being blunt about why that matters. To a shopper, cannabis and hemp do not read the same. Cannabis implies something with an active cannabinoid in it. Hemp, in a food context, usually implies the plant as an ingredient. The maker chose the milder and more accurate word and our listing carries the stronger one, so we would rather correct it here than let the title do the talking.

We have used the manufacturer's name at the top of this page for the same reason. The web address and the product code still carry the distributor's version, which is why the heading and the title do not quite match.

Two families, and only one of them prints a number

Multitrance's coffee range divides cleanly in two, and once you see the pattern it is obvious on the shelf.

One family is named for CBD: CBD Coffee Instant Cappuccino, CBD Coffee Instant Caramel Cappuccino and CBD Hot Chocolate Instant. All three state 10mg of CBD per sachet, on the pack and in the product name.

The other family is named for hemp: Hemp Coffee Instant Cappuccino, Hemp Coffee Instant Caramel Cappuccino and Hemp Hot Chocolate Instant. None of the three states any cannabinoid figure at all. This product is in that second family.

Same flavours, same sachet format, same box, two families, and only one of them carries a milligram figure. The manufacturer's own product page for the hemp cappuccino is explicit that no CBD figure is stated because it is a hemp product rather than a CBD-infused one.

What the hemp in it actually is

Here we have to be careful, because the honest answer is that the manufacturer does not say precisely.

The hemp cappuccino page describes it as hemp infused and does not specify whether that means seed, extract or flavouring. The ingredients appear on that page as an image rather than as text, so they are not readable, and no allergen declaration is published anywhere. That is the fourth product in this part of our range where the ingredients on a food item are not published in a form anyone can actually read.

There is one useful clue. The sibling product in the same family is listed by Multitrance as Cannabis Coffee Capsules with 250mg of hemp seeds per capsule. Hemp seed is a food ingredient rather than a cannabinoid extract. Cannabinoids sit in the resin on the flower, not in the seed, which is why a product can contain a substantial quantity of hemp seed and still state no CBD.

So the reasonable reading is that this is a coffee made with hemp as a food ingredient rather than as a source of cannabinoids. We are not going to state that as fact, because the maker has not, and we are not going to claim the product contains no CBD either, because nobody has tested it and published a figure in either direction. What we can tell you is that no figure is stated, and that the version with a figure exists.

The naming rule that now holds across three brands we stock

This is not a Multitrance quirk. It is a pattern across the category, and knowing it will stop you buying the wrong thing more than once.

Euphoria splits its sweets the same way. Anything named CBD something is described by the maker as made with pure CBD and carries a milligram figure. Anything named Cannabis something is described by its flavour and carries no figure at all.

Professor Herb splits its solid extracts the same way, though with different words. Its Hemp Solid Extract range publishes a percentage on every type. Its H4CBD range publishes nothing but the phrase extreme high strength.

And Multitrance splits its hot drinks the same way, as set out above.

So the rule is simple and it works: in this category the word on the front tells you which family you are in, and only one family prints a number. If a product carries a cannabinoid name and a milligram figure, it is making a claim about its contents. If it carries a plant name and no figure, it is telling you what it is made with, not how much of anything is in it. Neither is dishonest. They are just different products, and the packaging rarely explains which is which.

What arrives and how it is made up

A box of ten single-serve sachets, weighing 185 grams in total. Each sachet is a full cappuccino mix, so the coffee, the milk powder and the sweetness are all in there rather than needing anything added.

Preparation is exactly what you would expect: empty a sachet into a mug, add hot water, stir. The maker's own instruction is no longer than that. Instant cappuccino mixes foam as you stir, so pouring the water in briskly rather than gently gives you a better head on it.

Two practical notes it is worth having. Instant milk powders dissolve better in water just off the boil than in water straight out of a kettle at a rolling boil, which tends to give you a grainier cup. And because everything is premixed to a set sweetness, this is not a drink you can easily adjust: it arrives the way it arrives.

On the two flavours: Classic is a straightforward creamy cappuccino, and Caramel is the same base with a sweeter, more confectionery finish. Caramel currently reads as out of stock for us, so check the selector before you settle on it.

Who should not buy this

If you have a dairy allergy or intolerance, hold off and ask us first. It is a cappuccino mix, so milk powder is a near certainty, and the manufacturer publishes the ingredients only as an image that cannot be read. We would rather get the specification from our distributor than have you guess.

If you drink coffee for the coffee, be realistic about what an instant cappuccino sachet is. It is premixed, presweetened and convenient, and it is not going to compete with something you brew.

If you were drawn in by the word cannabis on the title, that word is not the manufacturer's, as explained at the top. There is nothing here that the word implies.
