HaZe Cannabis Dark Chocolate with Hemp Seeds, 80g

What is in the bar, and what the maker says about it

The ingredient list is short and worth reading in full, because it answers most of the questions people arrive with.

Cocoa mass, sugar, shelled hemp seeds at ten per cent, cocoa butter, fat-reduced cocoa powder, soy lecithin as an emulsifier, and vanilla aroma. That is the bar. The cocoa content is 70 per cent and the net weight is 80 grams.

On the cannabinoid question, Multitrance is unusually direct. Its own chocolate range page states that this cannabis chocolate contains no CBD or THC, only shelled hemp seeds at ten per cent. We are quoting the manufacturer rather than drawing a conclusion, which is a more comfortable position than we usually get to occupy on products with cannabis in the name.

Hemp seed is a food ingredient. It comes from the seed rather than the flower, and cannabinoids sit in the resin on the flower, which is why a bar can be ten per cent hemp seed and still carry no cannabinoid figure at all. If cannabidiol is what you are after, this is the wrong shelf, and there is a note further down about where to go instead.

Two things on the label that matter more than the cannabis word. It contains soy, from the lecithin. And it carries a may-contain advisory for traces of milk and other nut kernels, which is not the same thing as containing nuts, as the next section explains.

Two brand names, one bar, and a hazelnut that matters

Multitrance sells this chocolate under two separate brand lines: HaZe Holland, which is this one, and its own Multitrance name. On a shelf they look like the same product in different wrappers, and to a large extent they are.

The difference that actually matters is not the branding. It is whether hazelnuts are an ingredient.

This bar lists hemp seeds and no nuts, with a may-contain advisory for traces of nut kernels. A may-contain advisory means nuts are not an ingredient but the production line handles them. Separately in the range there is a HaZe Cannabis Dark with Hazelnuts, where hazelnuts are in the bar by design, and the maker's own listing for the Multitrance-branded dark describes it as containing hemp seeds and hazelnuts too.

So you have bars that are near-identical in appearance and description, where one has nuts as an ingredient and another has them only as a trace risk. For anyone with a nut allergy that is not a detail, it is the entire decision, and it is not separated on any retailer page we looked at. If it applies to you, read the ingredient list on the specific bar rather than the range description, and ask us if anything is unclear before ordering.

For everyone else the difference is texture. Hazelnuts give you a second, harder crunch and a distinctly roasted note. Hemp seeds alone are softer and greener.

What ten per cent hemp seed does inside a 70 per cent bar

Ten per cent by weight is a substantial inclusion rather than a garnish, and in an 80 gram bar it is genuinely noticeable in every square.

Shelled hemp seeds are small, soft-crunchy and mild, with a nutty character and a faint green note behind it, somewhere between a sunflower seed and a pine nut. On their own they are unassertive.

Put them in 70 per cent dark chocolate and something specific happens. Dark chocolate at that strength is bitter, low in sugar and heavy on cocoa solids, and it does not smooth anything over. The green nutty note and the bitterness reinforce each other rather than one hiding the other, so what you get is an earthier, drier, more savoury bar than the seeds alone would suggest.

That is the real difference between this and the milk version of the same idea, which we cover on its own page. Milk chocolate has enough sugar and dairy fat to round the seeds off into something that reads simply as nutty. The dark bar does not, and whether that is a recommendation depends entirely on how you feel about bitter chocolate.

If you find 70 per cent bars pleasant on their own, this is a good one to try. If you have always found dark chocolate a bit austere, the hemp seeds are not going to soften it and the milk version is the better choice.

Storing it, and why this bar goes stale before the chocolate does

Chocolate keeps well. Seeds do not, and this bar is ten per cent seeds, which changes the storage advice from the usual.

Hemp seed is high in polyunsaturated fat, and polyunsaturated fats oxidise faster than the cocoa butter around them. The practical result is that the seeds in an old bar taste flat or faintly cardboard-like well before the chocolate itself shows any sign of age. You will notice it as a loss of the nutty character rather than as anything unpleasant.

So the sensible approach is to store it cool, dark and sealed, and to eat it within a reasonable time of opening rather than leaving a half-eaten bar in a warm kitchen for a month. Keeping it in a fridge is not ideal either, since chocolate picks up fridge smells and can bloom when it comes back to room temperature, so a cool cupboard is better than either extreme.

None of that is unique to this brand. It applies to any seed or nut inclusion in chocolate, and it is the one piece of practical guidance that no listing for this bar bothers with.

If you wanted the CBD version, or this one is unavailable

Two separate things to sort out here, because they lead in different directions.

First, availability. This bar is currently out of stock. The closest things we do have are the HaZe dark with hazelnuts, which is the same chocolate with nuts added, and the plain Multitrance cannabis dark. Both are the same proposition: a dark bar with hemp seeds and no cannabinoids.

Second, and more important if it is why you are here. Multitrance does make a chocolate that genuinely contains CBD. It is sold as a 100mg CBD dark chocolate with salty caramel pearls, it uses a cannabis extract rather than seeds, and it states its milligram figure on the pack. We do not stock it. If a measured cannabinoid content in a chocolate is what you want, we would rather tell you that plainly than sell you a hemp seed bar and let you assume.

Who should not buy this

If you want CBD, this is not a CBD product and the manufacturer says so. Nothing about it supports buying it for cannabidiol.

If you have a nut allergy, read the section above properly. This bar does not list hazelnuts as an ingredient but does carry a may-contain advisory for nut kernels, and a closely related bar has hazelnuts in it by design. If that distinction matters to you, check the bar rather than the range.

If you have a soy allergy, the emulsifier is soy lecithin and it is a declared allergen.

If you do not get on with dark chocolate, ten per cent hemp seeds will not change that. Seventy per cent cocoa is bitter and the seeds add an earthy note rather than sweetness. The milk version exists for exactly this reason.

And it is out of stock at the moment, so the practical answer today is one of the alternatives in the table.
