RAW Hemp Plastic Rolling Machine, 110mm

The number is the paper length, and one listing has it wrong

Rolling machines come in a small number of sizes and every one of them is named after the paper it is built to take. That is the whole rule, and once you know it the naming stops being mysterious.

Seventy millimetres takes regular papers, the short ones also sold as single wide. Seventy-nine takes 1 1/4 papers, the middle length. One hundred and ten takes king size, both slim and wide, because those differ in height rather than length.

RAW makes all three and we stock all three, which is why we can set the mapping out rather than describing one machine in isolation.

Now the correction, and it matters because it is on a product we sell. The trade listing for the 70mm machine in this range describes it as rolling king size papers, giving the figure 70mm alongside. That cannot be right. King size papers are 110mm long. A 70mm machine will not take them, and anyone who buys one expecting it to will find the paper hanging out of both ends.

The listing for this 110mm machine gets it right, describing the large size as taking RAW king size papers. Two listings in one range, one accurate and one not, which is why we would rather publish the rule than repeat either description.

Which machine fits which paper we sell

This is the part that only works because we stock the papers as well as the machines, and it saves a guess.

Every king size paper on our shelf is 110mm long. The RAW Connoisseur organic hemp is king size slim at 110mm. The Gary Payton Baller edition is king size slim at 110mm. The RAW x Lyrical Lemonade collaboration is king size wide, which is the same 110mm length with more height. All three go in this machine.

Slim and wide both fit, incidentally, because the machine is sized on length and the extra height of a wide paper simply gets rolled in. A wide paper produces a thicker roll from the same machine, which is what wide is for.

The King Palm hemp papers are 1 1/4, so those want the 79mm machine rather than this one. Nothing on our shelf currently needs the 70mm.

One caveat on rolls rather than booklets. Juicy Jay's hemp paper comes as a continuous roll you tear to length, and a fixed-size machine is the wrong tool for those, because the point of a roll is choosing your own length each time.

What hemp plastic is, and what the phrase does not tell you

The search results for this product are mostly not product pages at all. They are articles asking what hemp plastic is, which tells you something about why people arrive here, so it is worth answering properly.

Hemp plastic is a composite. Hemp fibre, which is roughly seventy to eighty per cent cellulose, is combined with a polymer to make a mouldable material. The cellulose gives it strength for its weight, which is the technical reason anyone bothers.

Here is the part nobody selling hemp plastic products mentions. The polymer in that composite may itself be plant-derived, or it may be an ordinary petroleum plastic with hemp fibre used as a filler. Both get called hemp plastic. They are very different things environmentally, and the proportion of hemp can range from most of the material to a small fraction of it.

RAW does not publish which formulation these machines use, and neither does our distributor. So we are not going to tell you this machine is biodegradable, or compostable, or made without fossil fuels, because we do not know and the phrase on the label does not establish it. What we can tell you is that it is a hemp composite rather than plain plastic, and that if the environmental question is the reason you are buying, that is a question worth putting to RAW rather than accepting from us.

What a rolling machine actually does

Worth being clear about, because a machine solves one problem and not others.

It makes a uniform cylinder. You load the material, close the machine, roll the aprons until it is packed, feed the paper in and roll it shut. What comes out is the same shape every time, which is the entire point: consistency rather than speed.

It does not make cones. A machine of this type produces a straight tube of even thickness, and if you want a conical roll you either buy pre-rolled cones or learn to do it by hand. That is the single most common disappointment with rolling machines and it is worth knowing before rather than after.

It also does not fix under-filling. A machine needs enough material to press against, and a thin load will produce a loose, floppy roll rather than a neat thin one.

On upkeep, the aprons are the part that wears. They stretch and eventually slip, which is a consumable reality rather than a fault, and it is why the metal-framed machines exist at the other end of the range.

RAW makes two of those we do not stock: an automatic rolling box at 79mm, and a 12 inch machine with a metal frame built for its Supernatural papers. Neither is in our range and both are a different proposition from a hand roller.

What is in it, and what is not

A hemp plastic composite and nothing else. No cannabinoid, no CBD, no tobacco. Nothing in the UK rules covering CBD products applies to a rolling machine, and what you put through it is a separate matter entirely.

Our own catalogue system generated a description calling this a CBD isolate hemp accessory, which is wrong in both halves. It is neither an isolate nor a source of any cannabinoid. That text has been replaced here.

Who should buy a different one

Anyone rolling 1 1/4 papers. That is the 79mm machine, and this one will leave you with paper hanging out of both ends in the opposite direction.

Anyone who wants cones. A hand roller of this type makes straight cylinders and cannot be persuaded otherwise.

Anyone who already rolls well by hand. A machine buys consistency, not quality, and an experienced hand roller usually finds it slower rather than faster.

Anyone who wants something that will last for years. The apron is a wearing part on any plastic roller, and a metal-framed machine is the answer to that rather than this.

And anyone buying it for the environmental angle should read the hemp plastic section above first. The phrase is doing less work than it appears to, and the composition is not published.
