Menthol does not make anything colder

The cooling you get from peppermint is real as a sensation and entirely fictional as a temperature. Nothing in your mouth drops a single degree.

What happens instead is specific and well documented. Your cold-sensitive nerve endings carry an ion channel called TRPM8, which is the receptor that detects genuine cold. When the temperature falls, TRPM8 opens, calcium flows into the neuron, the neuron fires, and your brain interprets that signal as cold.

Menthol binds to that same channel and opens it directly. The neuron sends the identical signal it would send if you had just drunk something cold, and your nervous system has no way to tell the difference. That is the whole mechanism.

It is worth being precise that this is a description of a sensation, not of an effect on the body beyond it. Menthol is tricking a cold sensor. That is all we are claiming for it.

Which brings us to why this matters on this particular product rather than on a sweet or a drink.

Why the flavour choice changes what the minute feels like

EndoFlo's instruction for these tinctures is to place the oil under the tongue and hold it there for thirty to sixty seconds before swallowing. Our Professor Herb listing explains why sublingual products are used that way.

For a flavour, that is a very unusual set of conditions. The same liquid stays in contact with the same small patch of tissue, without being chewed, diluted or swallowed, for something close to a minute.

A fruit flavour behaves predictably in that situation. It arrives at full strength, your taste receptors adapt to it, and it fades across the hold. By the time you swallow, it is noticeably weaker than when you started.

Peppermint does the opposite, and the receptor mechanism is why. TRPM8 activation accumulates while the menthol sits against the tissue, so the cooling is at its mildest in the first few seconds and at its strongest at the end. The hold does not wear the flavour out. It winds it up.

So on a sublingual oil, choosing peppermint is not the same kind of decision as choosing peppermint in a gummy. It changes the shape of the experience from something that fades to something that builds.

Whether that is welcome is a matter of preference. Some people find a strengthening cold at the sixty second mark makes the wait easier to sit through. Others find it becomes more insistent than they wanted by the end.

The flavour that does not borrow a strain name

There is a detail in how this range is named that is easy to walk past.

Lemon OG and Strawberry OG both carry a suffix taken from cannabis strain naming, which our listing for the mixed selection goes into. Peppermint carries nothing of the sort. It is just the name of a plant.

That reads like a decision about what each flavour is for. Two of them are sold partly on the association with cannabis culture. This one is sold on what it does in the mouth, which on a full spectrum extract is a job worth doing.

Because full spectrum tastes of plant. Keeping the minor cannabinoids and terpenes in rather than refining them out is the whole point of the grade, and it leaves a green, faintly bitter base that isolate simply does not have.

Peppermint is the most effective of the three at handling it, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of strength. Sweetness competes with the base on the same channel and has to shout to win. Cooling occupies a different channel altogether, so it can cover the vegetal note without being louder than it.

Plant aromatics over plant aromatics

One more thing that makes this a more coherent pairing than it might look.

Menthol and menthone, the compounds responsible for peppermint's character, are terpenoids. That is the same chemical family as the terpenes EndoFlo says its crystal resistant distillate is rich in, and the same family the aroma of cannabis comes from.

So this is not a synthetic sweet flavour laid over a botanical extract. It is one set of plant aromatics sitting alongside another, which is part of why the two read as belonging together rather than as a cover-up.

The THC position, and who should choose differently

Full spectrum is the only extract grade made by keeping the whole cannabinoid profile rather than stripping part of it out, so the controlled compounds are retained deliberately. Now the cautions.

Skip this if you dislike menthol. The section above is a good reason to like it and an equally good reason to avoid it, because a sensation that builds over a minute is harder to ignore than one that fades.

Skip it if you want documented cannabinoid content today, in which case an isolate or broad spectrum oil is the direct answer since both are made by removing the controlled compounds.

Skip it if you want a concentrated bottle, because just under seventeen milligrams a millilitre is gentle by the standards of our shelf.

And skip it if you intend to add the oil to food or a drink rather than take it under the tongue, since the entire argument for this flavour depends on the hold, and a mint oil stirred into coffee is simply a mint coffee.
