Four different cannabinoids are on this shelf

Most CBD categories contain CBD and nothing else. This one does not, and the labels do not shout about it. Read the product names carefully and you will find four separate compounds in the same aisle.

CBD is the bulk of it, across Euphoria's hash range and Professor Herb's briquettes and solid extracts. CBG appears once, on a Euphoria solid extract at 30 percent, and once more in a Cannapower resin that blends it with CBD. CBC, which is rarer still, appears on the Euphoria Zkittlez solid extract at 30 percent. All three are naturally occurring plant cannabinoids and all three are non-intoxicating.

H4CBD is the odd one out and the reason this section exists. It is not a plant cannabinoid at all. Six lines here are H4CBD, and they are set out in their own section further down.

Nothing in this aisle is sold as a food, which sounds like a technicality and is not. It changes which rules apply, and that is covered in the legal section below.

Percentages, and what they actually weigh

Every other aisle on this site labels in milligrams. This one labels in percent, and none of the pages currently ranking for these searches converts one into the other, which leaves the single most useful number invisible.

The conversion is simple. A percentage is the proportion of the piece that is cannabinoid, so 40 percent of a 1g piece is about 400mg, and 6 percent of the same piece is about 60mg. Weight matters as much as percentage: Professor Herb sells 2g solid extracts, so its 22 percent piece holds roughly 440mg, more than a 1g piece at 40 percent despite the lower number on the label.

That makes the spread here enormous. The mildest thing in the aisle is a Euphoria 6 percent 1g at roughly 60mg. The strongest is the Diamonds and Sauce full-spectrum 95 percent at 1.5g, which works out near 1,425mg, more than twenty times as much cannabinoid in a piece barely bigger.

Two cautions. These are approximations from the stated percentage and weight, not measurements, and a percentage on a solid extract covers total cannabinoid content rather than CBD specifically, which is why a CBG or CBC extract can read 30 percent while containing very little CBD. And a higher percentage is not a better product, it is a more concentrated one.

Hash, solid extract, shatter, pre-rolls and blend

Five sub-shelves, and the differences between them are about texture and how the extract was made rather than about strength.

Hash is the largest group and the traditional one: resin separated from the plant and pressed into a block. The names describe method or origin. Bubble hash is made with ice water, charas is hand-rubbed, and Afghan and Moroccan describe regional pressing styles. Professor Herb's briquettes are a firmer pressed format sold in 3.5g pieces with flavour names such as Forbidden Fruit, Gelato and Tangerine Dream.

Solid extracts are the next step along: further concentrated, generally higher percentage, and the shelf where the CBG and CBC lines live along with the 95 percent full-spectrum piece.

Shatter and crumble are the glassy and the crumbly versions of the same idea. Euphoria's shatter runs from 93mg up to 465mg, and the crumble sits at 460mg, and these are the only items in the aisle labelled in milligrams rather than percent.

Pre-rolls are ready-made: the Euphoria H4CBD Magic Sticks at 100mg and the Snapz Duo hemp cigarettes. The H4CBD ones are not CBD, as ever.

Hemp flower is a single line, the Professor Herb Premium Hemp Blend, which is loose blend rather than an extract. It is the one item here that is plant material rather than something pressed or refined out of it.

The six ranges we stock

Every page ranking for these terms is a single-catalogue specialist, so none of them can tell you when another brand suits you better. Here is the whole aisle at once.

Euphoria is over half of it and owns the percentage ladder from 6 up to 50. Professor Herb owns the pressed briquette format and the larger 2g pieces. The other four brands each contribute one line, and one of those, the Diamonds and Sauce 95 percent, is the strongest thing on the site by concentration.

Where this aisle sits in UK law, stated plainly

This is the section other pages in this category either skip or get wrong, so it is worth the space.

The operative test is the same one that governs every CBD product in the UK: a product may be sold when it holds no more than 1mg of controlled cannabinoids in the whole container. That comes from the exempt-product provisions in the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. It is a per-container figure, not a percentage, and not a per-gram figure either.

Three of the four pages ranking above this one state a percentage instead. One of them cites Article 32 of EU Regulation 1307/2013 as the reason its products are lawful. That article is part of the Common Agricultural Policy and concerns which hectares of farmland qualify for direct payments to farmers. It has nothing whatever to do with whether a UK shop may sell you a gram of hash, and the fact that it is being quoted as though it does tells you how confused this corner of the market is.

Novel Foods, the regime that governs our gummies, oils, drinks and edibles, does not apply here, because nothing in this aisle is sold as food. That is a genuine difference from every other aisle on this site rather than a loophole, and it means an FSA authorisation is neither held nor relevant for these products.

Which leaves the part that most retailers in this category bury in a checkout tickbox. The UK industrial hemp licence covers the stalk and the seed of the plant. Flower and leaf are not within it. That is why hash, hemp flower and pressed blends are retailed across the UK as collectible or novelty items not intended for consumption, and why the most careful competitor in this ranking set asks customers to agree not to smoke, vape or consume what they have bought. Another admits outright that most of its customers ignore that advice. We would rather set it out here than in small print: these are sold to over-18s as collectible items, and that framing is the reason they can be sold at all.

One more thing that matters here more than anywhere else on the site. Twenty-one of the forty-five lines in this aisle are full spectrum, the grade that deliberately retains the plant's trace THC, and this is exactly where the 1mg per container test does real work. H4CBD is not CBD

Six lines in this aisle are H4CBD: two Euphoria solid hashes at 10 and 30 percent, the Euphoria Magic Sticks pre-roll, the Monkey King hash incense, and two Professor Herb solid extracts including the Red Lebanon. Anything with H4 in the name is one of them.

H4CBD is hydrogenated CBD. Hydrogen is added to CBD in a laboratory, which produces a related but chemically different molecule. That makes it semi-synthetic rather than a plant cannabinoid, and it means the research base behind it is thin compared with CBD. It is sold because people report it as considerably stronger than CBD, and the market for it exists on that basis.

It holds no Novel Foods authorisation. As set out above, that regime does not reach this aisle in any case, since nothing here is sold as food, but the point is worth stating because H4CBD is also sold as gummies and oils elsewhere, where the absence of authorisation matters directly.

We stock these lines because our buyer chose to after being shown the full argument against doing so, and the condition of that decision is that we label them plainly wherever they appear rather than filing them quietly among the CBD ranges. One page ranking above this one manages to describe H4CBD as delivering a stronger and longer effect while simultaneously assuring readers its range has no psychoactive effects. Both cannot be true, and we are not going to write the same sentence.

Who should buy something else

This is the aisle we would steer most people away from, and it is worth being direct about why.

If you want a CBD product that sits inside the Food Standards Agency regime, with an authorisation dossier behind it, buy from the CBD oil or CBD gummies aisles instead. Those are food supplements and are regulated as such. Nothing here is.

If you are new to CBD entirely, this is the wrong starting point. Percentages are harder to reason about than milligrams, the pieces are not portioned, and there is no measured amount anywhere in the process. Oil gives you a dropper and a number.

If your workplace tests for drugs, note that nearly half this aisle is full spectrum, which is the grade that retains trace THC. Isolate lines are the conservative choice and no retailer can promise you a test result on any product.

Handling and storage

Solid extracts behave differently from every other format on this site, and a little care keeps them usable.

Warmth is the enemy of shape. Hash softens in a warm room and shatter can go from glassy to sticky in a pocket, at which point it becomes difficult to handle and impossible to divide evenly. Keep pieces cool, dark and in a sealed container rather than loose in foil.

Cannabinoids degrade with light and air rather than falling off a cliff, so a piece kept sealed in a cupboard holds up for a long time. A piece left out in a sunny room does not, and a batch report issued months earlier tells you nothing about what heat and daylight have done since.
